Today we’d like to introduce you to Shea McGrath.
Shea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had an interest in photography, even as a young child. I loved disposable cameras and was gifted a couple of film cameras and simple digital cameras when I was in middle school. When I was in college, I studied abroad and took photos of all the places I traveled around Spain. I received so many compliments on my photography from family members and even strangers, but I didn’t think they were all that spectacular since all I had was a cheap digital camera. When I got back to Iowa where I was attending college, I bought my first DSLR and applied for a job posting for a “photographer’s assistant” that I saw on the student job board. That job quickly led me to second shooting over 60 weddings during college!
After I graduated college, I decided to take a teaching job in Madrid, Spain. While I was abroad, I started to miss photography, so I began taking photos of other teachers, bloggers, and young couples. I was even able to photograph a wedding in Spain! I quickly started to realize that photography was my love and passion. I started a website and before I knew it I was booking weddings all on my own! I have now photographed over 200 weddings and have learned SO much about photography as well as owning a business!
Has it been a smooth road?
Owning your own business is never a smooth road. There are days even after being in business for five years when I think I’m not going to get any inquiries or booking for the next year. Even though that has never happened, there are always good days and bad days! There are days when I feel like I’m a total failure and there are days when I feel like I’m on top of the world. It’s a roller coaster!
When I first started my business, I had no idea what I was doing. Sure, I could take a good photo, but I knew nothing about contracts, invoices, taxes, timelines, email communication, how to price my work, how to under-promise and over-deliver, etc. It took A LOT of guesswork and I made a lot of mistakes. But I learned what worked and what didn’t work for me and my business. And what works for me, may not work for the next person.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Shea McGrath Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I run a photography business called Shea McGrath Photography. I photograph weddings, families, newborns, and I’m starting to take on more high school seniors. However, I specialize in weddings. I love weddings and I love love. I think it shows that my wedding and engagement photos are my best work because that’s my passion.
I am proud of how much my wedding photography business has grown over the past five years and how much I have learned in the process!
I believe the mix of my timeless photos full of emotion, editing true-to-color images, staying away from trends, and my communication/rapport with my couples is what sets me apart from other photographers. I want my couples to feel special and to know that I really do care about them. I want them to know that their day is all about them and their love for each other. I am just there to tell the story.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
There are so many wonderful things that I love about Denver. The 300+ days of sunshine, easy access to the mountains, fun outdoor activities and events, craft breweries, and wonderful coffee shops to name a few.
What I like least is easy: the traffic.
