Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Renner.
Vanessa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Mexico City and decided to move to Denver, CO with my husband and kids four years ago. Denver was a place where we spent most of our winters and summers together, so it was a natural choice for us.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and always worked on the creative side of things. I was lucky to have the opportunity to work for a construction company here in Colorado, but felt something was missing, I longed for a business of my own where I could combine my role as a professional and a mother of two. Working a nine to five did not allow me to spend enough time with my children and always felt I was missing on their little moments.
Yearning for more, I had to come up with something that would allow me to be independently creative.
This spoke to me so loudly I needed to find a way to connect with other women who felt the same way.
I created a blog where I could contribute to women out there who are in this same situation, working moms who have to split between their responsibilities and need to feel comfortable doing what they love, while taking care of themselves and their loved ones.
I learned how to create a blog from scratch, created the social media accounts needed and then I let the magic happen. I realized my posts started to resonate with women and that kept me motivated to write more. This project was beginning to make sense!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, not at all. Moving to the U.S. was a big change, building a new life in a new country was an eye-opening experience. I had a lot to learn, after all, it was a new culture, a new system. We left our families back in Mexico and it felt lonely at times. Although I spoke English before coming, it was still not my first language and it took some time getting used to.
Once Life Unminimal was launched, I started worrying about my content, what I had to offer and how to keep it interesting, I had to find my voice. Launching Life Unminimal took some time. I didn’t have the experience in creating a blog, I started by creating content that spoke to me, as a woman, as a mother and a professional and I knew would speak to other women as well.
I believe the hardest part was gaining our reader’s trust. It seems that getting followers is now becoming a priority to some, but at Life Unminimal we believe in creating a close relationship with our readers and this has been our priority since day one.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Life Unminimal story. Tell us more about your work.
Life Unminimal is a lifestyle blog for women, specializing in wellness, relationships, motherhood, food, and style. Our goal is to be a go-to guide for working moms looking for inspiration.
While we all strive every day to declutter our spaces and our minds of all the noise and the mess, life happens! No minimalism or Marie Kondo-ing can be achieved while raising kids, cooking breakfast, making lunches, doing laundry, juggling work, marriage, beauty, and fitness all at the same time.
Life Unminimal is an invitation to embrace our messy lives together and enjoy the journey that comes with it. This is a space for women to find inspiration and joy, a place where women can see and accept themselves as the great women they are. There are many women blogs out there but what sets us apart from our competitors is our honest voice. We aim for an honest and approachable tone, which makes readers come back for more.
It’s been almost a year since the start of Life Unminimal and it’s been a great journey so far!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I consider myself very lucky, I try to see every circumstance I encounter as an opportunity to learn and become a better person. Every challenge I’ve encountered has brought me to where I am today.
With this blog, I’ve had the chance to connect with people on a different level, it brought me closer to my family and has enabled me to develop a successful business that I can feel proud of.
