Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Sorkin.
Rebekah, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Absolutely! For starters, I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Trauma Therapist. I completed my Master’s of Social Work degree at the University of Denver with an advanced certification in Trauma Studies. Over the years, I have worked in various inpatient, outpatient, residential and in-home settings, with individuals, families, parents and children.
I am the owner of Branch Counseling and an outpatient psychotherapist, specializing in trauma, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), personal growth, attachment, and relationships. Additionally, I am a clinician at Children’s Hospital Colorado in the Psychiatric Emergency Department, where I work with children experiencing suicidal, behavioral and psychiatric crises.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not always been easy. The relationships we have with ourselves and with those we care about are what give us the resilience to adapt, survive, and thrive in light of these challenges. Being able to relate to obstacles in our life as opportunities, rather than barriers, opens a whole world of possibility to learn more about ourselves, the world around us, and those we care about. Connection, integration, and resilience are born out of these opportunities if we allow them to teach us, challenge us, and push us into a deeper relationship with ourselves and with each other.
The tendency to isolate and protect our vulnerabilities when the road becomes rocky is something so many of us can relate to – myself included. That emotional shield can make it hard to authentically connect with our partner, our children, our colleagues, our friends, and even ourselves. The challenge to stay vulnerable and authentic in the face of hardship can be really difficult. As I have had the honor of seeing the positive and life-changing impacts that supportive and authentic relationships have had in my own life, and in the lives of those around me, I am reminded that the goal is not necessarily to find the smoothest road possible, but rather to seek authentic connection, safe vulnerability, and to be well-equipped with the love and support from those we care about most.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Branch Counseling story. Tell us more about your work.
Branch Counseling provides compassionate psychotherapy to adults, individuals, couples, and parents. In addition to specializing in the treatment of trauma, PTSD, personal growth, attachment and relationships, Branch Counseling is proud to offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy as a powerful, evidence-based treatment for those who suffer from the impacts of trauma and PTSD. EMDR can also be effective in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and many other emotional states that can leave us feeling “stuck”. EMDR is one of the most studied and evidence-based treatments for PTSD, and one of the only trauma treatments endorsed by the VA and World Health Organization. I am proud to offer this incredible resource to my clients as another tool in the toolbox towards building an inner and outer life of meaning, compassion and connection.
As a trauma therapist, I am passionate about walking along side my clients on their path towards healing. The effects of trauma can be vast and complex, impacting nearly every aspect of someone’s life and relationships. Sometimes the source of trauma is clear. Other times, trauma is rooted in periods of instability, lack of safety, feeling unloved, unwanted, misunderstood, or alienated by a parent, caregiver, family or community. Because trauma so often occurs in the context of unhealthy and broken relationships, it can leave us feeling guarded and disconnected from ourselves, and even from those who truly love, and want to support us. The message left in trauma’s wake often tells lies about our value, worth, or wholeness as an individual. I have the honor of working with my clients to gradually replace these distortions with the truth of their story, their experience, and their voice by building lasting and healing connections with their mind, body, and with those they care about most.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
When I think about the role luck has played in my life and in the life of my business, I cannot think of a situation in which I felt the presence of “luck” without some combination of the following elements: Preparation, Opportunity and Trust.
The years I spent preparing to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, therapist, and owner of my own private practice, coupled with the opportunities I embraced along the journey that furthered me down this path, combined with the trust I had in myself and from those around me who also poured in so much love and support along the way, have culminated into a journey of personal growth, clinical development and joy.
