Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben and Stephanie Hauser.
Ben and Stephanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The concept for FOX•DOG COFFEE began as a small but mighty seed in our hearts many years ago. We pictured building a unique environment that celebrated our community by providing great coffee, excellent service, and a space to gather and build relationships with one another. When the opportunity to open a shop in Old Town Erie came along, we felt that the time had come to make our vision a reality.
We began construction on the space in early 2019, just a few weeks after our youngest son made a surprise appearance four months early, and opened for business on July 15, 2019. Through many twists and turns, we have been able to realize our vision and build the coffee shop of our dreams – one that serves and celebrates our community both at home and abroad through a faithful service of love, gratitude, and great coffee.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our youngest son was born less than a month after we received the keys to the space, which threw a wrench into all of our construction plans. He was born four months early, and so we divided our time among the NICU, our family at home, and remodeling what was once a chiropractor office into our shop. Because of the unexpected timing of things, we weren’t able to open as quickly as we had hoped, but we finally poured our first cup of coffee on July 15, 2019, just one month after our son came home from the hospital!
FOX•DOG COFFEE – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
FOX•DOG COFFEE is a family-owned, independent coffee shop in Erie, CO. Our biggest mission is to love, serve, and inspire, which means we exist to inspire the coffee journey by first loving and serving everyone in our community.
We started with the goal of building community over well-crafted cups of coffee, creating a place where everyone is welcome. In this way, we cultivate an intentional space for our customers to share stories and experiences with one another, and to build bridges between friends, family, and strangers alike. Our desire to connect with people extends beyond our brewing abilities – we care deeply about the people we serve and strive to establish ourselves as a presence that invites others to connect and share with one another. Your barista can be one of the most dynamic people in your life – walking with you through many life moments, both big and small. We want to be your refuge, your happy place, your community.
We are proud to work with and promote local roasters, which provides an opportunity for us to connect with a variety of friends in the industry and to share unique craft coffee with our customer base.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Above all else, if our guests leave our shop feeling valued and celebrated through our connection and service, we feel we have succeeded. Because we take pride in the coffee we offer, we feel that introducing people to new ways to enjoy their morning cup is key to our success as well. We love it when someone gets excited about our shop, whether it be because of our personal connection or the drinks we offer, and we feel proud of the presence we have in our community.
