Meet Danielle Ryan Broida of Four Sigmatic in Eldorado Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Ryan Broida.

Danielle is a Registered Herbalist (RH) of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG), Certified Holistic Nutritionist and National Educator at Four Sigmatic. Prior to joining forces with Four Sigmatic, she received her BA in Environmental Studies and Philosophy from Whitman College.

She studied Ayurveda in India and became a Certified Yoga Instructor on the banks of the Ganges River. She then worked with a Naturopathic Doctor in Indonesia where she became a Certified Raw Chef and Detox Coach. But it was leading trekking adventures into the backcountry of Thailand where she became particularly fascinated by herbal medicine.

After several years in Asia, she landed in Boulder, Colorado to formalize her education in holistic medicine. Upon completing her graduate studies at the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism (CSCH), she opened a private practice, Danielle Ryan Wellness, where she worked with hundreds of clients across the US, specializing in treatment for individuals with autoimmune conditions and chronic illness. She was invited to become the Instructor of Mycology at CSCH, where she still teaches.

Danielle brings her passion and expertise in herbal medicine, clinical practice, teaching, formulation, and her deep love for fungi, to the Everyday Magic® of Four Sigmatic as their National Educator. In her free time, you can find her outside—whether under the sun or stars, summer heat or winter snow. She’ll either be gardening, foraging, cooking plant-based recipes, rock climbing, hiking, skiing, surfing, or scuba diving.

Has it been a smooth road?
Far from a smooth road! I always felt like the one person who had no idea of where my path was leading. I am a big believer in following what is most alive in each moment or chapter of life, rather than having a long term plan and sticking to it regardless of changes along the way. I have chosen an organic path, which often means unexpected turns into new voyages, places, business endeavors, and more. But with the flexibility of not following a strict path from A to B, I find there is space for magic to occur, to be guided by the universe and lean into the natural flow of life.

One of the biggest challenges was truly not knowing the long term plan of any of my endeavors. I would always jump into the things that made me feel alive, that stoked the fire of passion in my belly and made me feel excited to get out of bed in the morning, but often these things had to do with subjects that did not align with a specific career or way to make ends meet. I had tons of odd jobs along the way, from slanging beer at a brewery in the evenings while I began my private practice as an herbalist, to working the backend logistics of a women’s travel company while in grad school. I’ve always worked to combine passion and work and it was almost a decade of odd jobs and temporary gigs until I truly found my place as the National Educator at Four Sigmatic.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Four Sigmatic story. Tell us more about the business.

As our National Educator, my job is to educate, amaze, delight, and connect with our customers to inspire Everyday Magic™. I travel around the country a few weeks of every month to visit our accounts, train employees, give talks, and get people excited about incorporating the world’s most nutrient-dense foods into their everyday lives in a way that is delicious, convenient, and truly beneficial for their longterm and vitality. When I’m not on the road educating, I am working on content for our newsletters, supporting our social media community, doing podcasts, and continuously reading, studying, and digging into traditional folklore and new research to keep my mind fueled and endlessly evolving.

I am incredibly proud to be part of a fun(gi) family and brand that so perfectly aligns with my deepest values. I believe one of my goals in this lifetime is to preserve ancient herbal wisdom and keep it alive in the Western world. At Four Sigmatic, this is exactly what we are doing. We use some of the world’s most ancient, studied ingredients like adaptogenic herbs and functional mushrooms and offer them in a way that makes sense for our modern world.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think we are at the very beginning of inviting the Fungi Kingdom into our daily lives. In the next 5-10 years, I see a huge increase in the awareness, education, and use of functional mushrooms in the Western world. Mushroom coffee is only the very start of this journey into remembering ancient herbal remedies and reintroducing them into our lives today.

I believe the Earth holds all the answers we need, and in the past several decades, we’ve shifted away from relying on the power of nature and are experiencing the consequences. I think we are beginning to see the shift in returning to nature, understanding that there is no pill that can replace taking a walk in the sunshine or eating whole foods. We’re seeing a rise in things like acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and CBD. We are waking up and remembering the wisdom and magic the Earth provides. I hope that in the next decade, with this awareness will come a greater sense of responsibility to take care of the Earth as stewards as we place more value on all she provides.
