Meet Trailblazer Becca Don

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Don.

Becca, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my management career in the beauty industry in 2013 in Bloomington, IN. I had just graduated with my bachelor’s degree in business and was applying to work at Indiana University in their admissions department. Upon arriving in Indiana, I decided I would find some management work to tide myself over while waiting to hear back from IU. I began working at an Aveda salon and immediately fell in love with the industry. It was the perfect marriage of small business management and marketing and the beauty industry – the two things that I loved the most! It wasn’t until then that I realized that my career could be focused in two fields that I loved. While in Indiana, I also became a makeup artist and worked as a bridal makeup artist for the salon that I ran. Three years later, I moved to Denver and met Nicki and Faye – the owners of Zandi K. It was a large jump from running a single location team of 13 to running dual location salon with a team of 50 but I couldn’t be happier. I get to do what I love every day which is grow our incredible business while my team makes people see themselves like we do – as beautiful human beings.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I feel as though I lucked out stumbling across my passion without looking for it – but I will say that it’s important to find the right fit. About two years into my initial salon, my passion for the industry began to dwindle, but I wasn’t in the environment that facilitated success in the way that I needed it. My advice would be to take your time, search internally for the things that you need and don’t force fit yourself into something that doesn’t feel good and authentic. The right fit will feel, well, right. It’s not always easy but after almost seven years of managing salons and being a makeup artist, I can genuinely say that I love my job and I feel extremely grateful for the opportunities presented to me after what felt like a very long struggle to find the right home.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I’m apart of an amazing network within the Aveda community. It’s a company that stands for the thing I believe in (environmental leadership, philanthropy, etc.) so when I’m feeling uninspired, I spend a lot of time looking back into the company and I am reinvigorated.
