Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Helms.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story starts when I was 24 years old and trapped in a job that was not what I thought it was. I graduated college that eager young girl ready to make her mark in the world…and when I jumped into my Plan A, the thing that my student loan payments reminded me about monthly, I instantly realized this wasn’t it.
I was working in the rat-race, bringing work home, unappreciated, overworked, coming home not sure if I said hello to my husband…eating dinner throwing my head on my pillow and then waking up and doing it all over again. I couldn’t find my passion or purpose in my career. The stress and anxiety was literally killing me to the point where I was crying and having panic attacks on Sundays knowing my weekend was over. I lived life in zombie mode. and I didn’t see a way out. What was even worse is that I KNEW I needed to quit but the idea of the “unknown” of “what I would do next?!” was scarier than actually staying in a job that was killing me…looking back now I can’t believe I thought my HEALTH and LIFE were worth so little to me. I was lost, depressed, and when I looked around I felt like I was the only 20 something person who felt this way…I felt alone.
Desperately looking for a way out and my new direction in life when I heard my inbox ding on Facebook. It was one of those messages we all get… “Hey, Sarah…blah blah blah” I don’t even think I read the whole message. I “knew” what she was offering to me and I felt a few things. First, I have a degree from college. I am way too good for this. Second, I don’t want to become “that person” and third I have ZERO experience in whatever she is offering to me. So, I did what we all do…said no thanks without even know what I was really saying “no” to.
Three months later, still DESPERATELY looking for my way out I was watching the posts my friend who messaged me put on her Facebook and honestly guys the thing that struck me the most is that she looked happy. An emotion I felt I hadn’t seen in years. I realized at that exact moment that my happiness is in MY control and that unless I made a change in my life no change was going to happen. So, in a matter of 10 minutes, I became a business owner at 27 years old.
It started out small. I just wanted to make enough to cover my student loans. However…shortly into this adventure, I found myself dreaming again, excited to wake up in the morning with purpose, and I was happy again. That was all it took for me to put my head down and get to work.
It has been with GRIT, getting back up after a setback..or two, and keeping my eye on the long term vision that has gotten me to where I am today. Over five years later, life looks very different. I’m now in my 30s and a MOM! I work from home designing my day with full-time freedom around my daughter. I don’t have an office commute, no one to approve my vacation days, no one looking over my shoulder and no salary cap…best of all no anxiety on Sundays!!!
However, I’ll tell you the best part is that I get to help others realize that the most important power you can have in life is the power to CHOOSE. To CHOOSE to take that trip or not. To CHOOSE to put your kid in daycare or not. To CHOOSE to work full-time or be able to take that part-time job that lights your heart on fire. To CHOOSE the fancy restaurant for date night. Whatever you want!! Life is your choice. Literally. You can choose to change it in a heartbeat. I have a team of over 500 all over the US, Canada, Australia and soon JAPAN and it makes me tear up looking at the wall I have in my office covered in cards from them sharing with me how much their life has changed because of the choice to open their mind up to this business. My dream is for everyone to once in their life take that chance without knowing 100% what might happen. The best things in life come from choices where you cant see where it might take you…and I know this… I am living proof!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Does any business have a smooth road? HAHA! Every business has cycles. Mine has been no different. I have had super high moments, like when our team crossed a HUGE milestone in our company to become part of the top 2% or the time my first team member achieved their milestone of becoming a Mercedes driver (it’s a big deal). Followed by times where our technology went out and events didn’t go according to plan.
Businesses don’t grow in a straight line up. I firmly believe that the lessons we learn in the up and down cycle prepare us for the next super high moment. Without the valleys we wouldn’t have the skills necessary to get us to the next level…those skills are only learned when we need to pull ourselves up off the ground.
Building a business isn’t easy, and I don’t think it’s about the degree you have that truly helps. We can learn almost anything we want these days via YouTube and google. The part about building a business that is hard is the ability to get up again, and again, and again and again. When your family doubts you. When your friends tell you you’re crazy. When you made a mistake that may have cost you your profit for the entire month. Those moments where it’s easier to say “oh well I guess this isn’t working out” but instead you find the GRIT to say “let’s try again” those are the moments that set business owners apart.
We’d love to hear more about Rodan + Fields.
I am a skincare consultant. I have the amazing opportunity to connect people to two of the Top Dermatologists in the world, who by the way have a super long waitlist if you wanted to see them in person, via our digital tools, and help them find the products they have created that will help them with their unique skin concerns get the best skin of their life. I know personally from having suffered from Acne how much better you feel about yourself when you look in the mirror and like the way you look. I have an amazing job where I get to help people feel that same feeling I did when my skin cleared for the first time, and I get to do this every day!!
We specialize in clinical skincare that improves skin conditions. They have patented ingredients and tools that when used fight signs of aging, sensitivity, acne, and sun damage.
We are the #1 skincare brand in North America. Taking the #1 spots in Premium Skincare for Aging and Acne as well as #1 for our Body Lotion, Active Hydration Body Replenish. Also, if you know anything about eyelashes then you have heard about our Lashboost which has dominated the category and gives you longer, fuller and darker lashes.
What sets us apart? Well, a few things, first our doctors. We have trained doctors who specialize in skin creating products for skin. They know the physiology of skin and the trends in the market to always create the best stuff.
Second, our products are tested and run through rigorous clinical trials on HUMAN SKIN (no animal testing yay!). Efficacy and effectiveness are our doctor’s top priority. They want skincare products to actually do what they say they do on the bottle.
Third, most skincare companies don’t have proof their products actually work. Not only do we have the clinical trials but if you search anywhere on social media you will see the THOUSANDS of before and after pictures posted. I am so proud of the pictures posted because it’s proof of the difference this company is making in the lives of its customers.
Lastly, we are a SKINCARE company first. We CHOOSE direct selling as a way to distribute our products to our customers, but we were not in direct sales when our products were first released to the public. Our doctors actually started in retail..in MALLS! This channel is amazing and is truly how the consumer of today shops but the heart of our company will always be our two dermatologists and their passion for helping people feel confident about their reflection.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Whatever you do don’t go at it alone. I am fortunate in that my company provides mentors, coaches, and a team of support to help you through the journey of being in business. However, if you are building a business on your own get yourself, someone, you can bounce ideas off of, vent some (you’ll need it at times), but also someone who will challenge you and help you grow.
I am a firm believer that people come into your life for a reason and I view networking as a puzzle trying to figure out how and why our paths crossed.
I’m not a huge fan of the “forced networking” where you feel like you are on a dating game. I don’t feel like its the number of people you meet but rather the quality of people you meet that really sets you apart when you are networking.
People want to be heard, appreciated and remembered. I think that’s the key to being a good networker. Find out how you do that best and then stick with it. I’d rather sit down and meet 2-3 new people at an event or event just meet one person for coffee and really get to know them rather than attend a huge networking thing but hey if that’s your thing you do you!
