Today we’d like to introduce you to John Schmulowitz.
John, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Baltimore, Maryland and have lived there for most of my life. It was in the DMV area (Maryland, DC, and Virginia) that I got my start in creating and DJing electronic dance music. For the past ten years, these two things have become big components of my life. My music project entitled “Prismatic” which I started back in 2013, has taken me all over the country and has touched the lives of thousands of people around the globe. While I mostly produce dubstep music, I’ve also been involved with other styles of electronic music such as house, drum and bass, hip hop, and funk. My music has also been featured on a couple episodes of the MTV show “The Challenge: Rivals III.”
In 2018 I packed my life up and moved to Denver, Colorado. I moved away from my home of 27 years to not only become involved with the wonderful Colorado electronic dance music scene but also to work at the national daytime news talk show “Daily Blast Live.” Originally starting out there as a production assistant, I have now become involved with their Digital Team, running audio for the show, and filling in for a slew of positions in their control room.
I’m also an electronic music production educator. For a number of years, I was the Music Technology Educator at the Baltimore non-profit youth outreach program entitled “Believe in Music.” Since moving to Denver, I have now become involved with the music production education company “Slam Academy” as well as the online-based music production education company “Defyre Media.”
Has it been a smooth road?
Being dedicated to creating music is something that takes a lot of time and sacrifice. Relationships, careers, and even employment at times take a back seat to really finding yourself musically. That being said, throughout my ten year music journey, I have managed to finish college with a bachelor from the Maryland university UMBC, have had multiple jobs/internships, and a healthy social life. Also, like with any creative avenue, there will always be self-doubt and harsh criticism towards oneself.
Moving to a new place that is far away from where I have lived for so long was also scary and risky. So far, it has turned out to be a wonderful life-changing experience that I’m very grateful for. I’m surprised that I have made it this far with my music.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
As Prismatic, I create all of my own original electronic dance music tracks with the music production software “Ableton Live.” These tracks are available for streaming and purchase on many of the major online music outlets (Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Amazon MP3, etc.). I also perform DJ sets as Prismatic, where I play mixed sets of my own original music and other people’s tracks. I’ve been told that I create high-quality dubstep tracks that have a nice blend of melodic and bass sound design elements as well as a “bouncy” flow. I’m proud of my output of work and my continuing desire to better myself with each and every track I create.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Denver is probably one of the best spots in the country for electronic dance music next to LA and Miami. There is such a high concentration of impressive producers and DJs and the community amongst these individuals is strong. There are electronic dance music events happening seemingly every night of the week and the fan base for these shows is fervent and enthusiastic.
My best advice to someone just starting out is too put as much time as you can into creating and learning music. Spending time on learning how to be a good DJ is also important as well but in my opinion, it is original content that will take you places. Not to mention, it feels good to create music from scratch that you feel proud of and that other people enjoy listening too. Networking with producers, DJs, promoters, and even electronic music fans is also important as it will instill a sense of community in yourself as well as set you up for opportunities to come in the near future. Online networking is just as important as real-life networking. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are all great avenues to connect with people interested in your music.
