Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Hughes.
Casey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Looking back, my love for Colorado started as a little girl. Growing up in Kansas we would spend summers driving across the border to go camping and luckily had a few winters of learning to ski. When I was 12, I told myself that I needed to live in the mountains. Colorado called to me then. Ten years later, I attended my first concert at Red Rocks by a band we had been following all summer (The String Cheese Incident). I was so blown away by the whole experience that I KNEW right then and there I never wanted to leave Colorado again. I packed up with my boyfriend at the time (now my husband), and we moved to Breckenridge. I landed a job at a small residential real estate firm in downtown Breck and realized that I wanted to help people live where I love…Colorado.
We eventually left the mountains for Denver and I moved to a private real estate investment firm. This side of the business looked a lot more like monopoly and a lot less like helping people find their dream homes. Still, I was learning, and after a few years I left and got yet another assistant job, this time for a commercial real estate broker. During this time, I not only learned the in’s and out’s of many different aspects of real estate, I learned what I didn’t want to do. I was still stuck with the feeling I had before in that small ski town. I wanted to help people buy and sell houses, and more importantly, after years of working beneath people, I wanted to be in charge of how I spent my time.
After much help and encouragement from my boss, I obtained my Real Estate License and switched from the commercial side to residential. I was terrified, but I also felt free for the first time in my life. Building my business had officially started, and not only was my business growing but so was my family. Life happened, and we ended up buying our first house 45mins outside of Denver in the small mountain town of Pine. This was my first purchasing experience as a New Broker, a first time homeowner, and in the mountains. Shortly after that, I found out I was pregnant. I started spending less time in the office and more time moving my business closer to home. Mountain real estate captured my attention and I saw an opportunity to break out of the world of the big real estate firms and do something that suited me.
I didn’t know if I could do it. I had never started a business from scratch, but I knew I wanted to be my own boss, I wanted to be in charge of my own brand, and I wanted to be ME. Roots Run Deep Realty is Me. It encompasses everything that got me to where I am and everything I hope for in the future. The things that brought me here are the same reasons that I want everyone to join. I love living here, and I aspire to help everyone love where I live too. My goal remains. I want to make people feel the same way about Buying and Selling in Colorado as I feel. I want to capture the feeling of beauty and magic that radiates out of this state, and I want to be able to have a job that allows me the freedom to reconnect to that feeling that I felt at Red Rocks on that fateful night. Love.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think the bumpiest part of my road was myself. Growing into what you want to be is hard work, and living your passion isn’t easy. It takes time, mistakes, and a lot of soul searching. I was in my mid-thirties by the time I realized who I was, what I wanted to do, and how to do it.
My advice is always – leap and nets appear. You will never be ready, just do it and trust your gut.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Roots Run Deep Realty – what should we know?
I’ll let you in on a little secret, my job has very little to do with Houses. I often refer to myself as a “Transition Coordinator” because I’m more of a guide for people who are making big life changes. Buying and selling a home is stressful and emotional and not something people do every day. It’s my everyday job and I am that calm, steady guide who can help them make that leap.
Roots Run Deep was founded with those exact principles. Everyone could use a little helping hand and guidance. My brand was founded because of an experience I had at a concert with my favorite band, The String Cheese Incident at Red Rocks. A band that I have continued to follow for the past 15 years because the energy is something I wish I could feel forever. The kindness, friendships, and feelings are unmatched. I have met a lot of my future Clients through seeing live music and sharing that bond.
Since my background is so vast it has made me the “jack of all trades” which is my specialty. I am equipped with the knowledge of navigating a mountain transaction as well as I can help you buy a condo in the middle of Downtown Denver. I’m known for going above and beyond with clients, not being afraid to do the grunt work, and for having a sense of humor throughout the entire process.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think that the age old trick is to take our weaknesses and turn them into strengths – we are seen as the more emotional gender and I believe that in today’s societies that is actually to our advantage. Our biggest opportunity is to bring that emotion back into everything we do.
