Meet Kiley Murphy of Creative Canvas Website Solutions in Arvada

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiley Murphy.

Kiley, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Here at Creative Canvas, we specialize in creating websites for small businesses. We leverage our industry expertise to create WordPress websites customized to fit your needs. A bit more personal: It all started on Jan 1, 2017. I had worked my way up to Creative Director within the Economic Development division of the University of Iowa, where I was managing the developers and designers for our department. But that same year our department lost funding, which meant we were going to lose our jobs. I could have applied within, but I already had a few freelance clients on the site/side, was filled with the entrepreneurial spirit, and quite frankly, never wanted to work for anyone else again. Here we are just over three years later, and we just opened up our 4th location in Vail, CO.

Helping others is at my core, and is what drives me to work (the sometimes) crazy hours that I do. But seeing a satisfied client makes it all worth it. I’ve been doing one high discount project every year to help companies & organizations with less of a budget. City High Baseball Club in Iowa City & Muslim Community Center of Greater San Diego are the main two I’ve worked with so far.

It has been a whirlwind to get from where I started to where I am! Trials and tribulations, learning from others failing so I didn’t have to go through it myself, bootstrapping when I didn’t have the cash but had the time, having mentors and business consultants, growing out of partnerships, trying new side ventures, and NEVER STOPPING!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Knowing that my cushy government job was coming to an end, I chose to take the leap and start my own business with just a few very small clients. Not enough time in a day – I finally got to a point where I couldn’t keep up with emails and projects and needed to hire a team.

As time progressed, this problem was coupled with bigger growing pains that have consistently challenged me, helping to sculpt me into the entrepreneur I am today. My old boss from the University of Iowa had a contract that if the department were to close, he would acquire all of their clients. So he essentially started 2017 with 70 web clients, and I was his go-to developer for over 75% of his client work. This was a great gig for a while, but over time our visions started to head in different directions, and it reached a point where it only made sense to part ways. It was an amazing relationship that helped jump-start my new venture, but sometimes you have to know when to make pivots within your business. It’s important to allow yourself to break through the bottlenecks within your business and push through to the next level.

This brought the new challenge of finding my own leads, which is what I’ve been focusing most of my internal time on these days. I’ve been diving headfirst into social media marketing with an emphasis on retargeting ads with Youtube and Facebook. We are also going very heavy on organic SEO (search engine optimization) this year.
