Conversations with the Inspiring Echo Lankford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Echo Lankford.

Echo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I’ve always had an artistic side to me. I loved to color, paint, doodle, redesign my room, read, write, and basically create anything I could.

I’ve also been so determined to just zip through life. When I was younger, I would just daydream my way through the day. Thinking of what tomorrow would look like, next week, next year… five years from now… But I never really focused on the present.

Then, summer of 2012 a huge life event happened, and my outlook on everything changed. June 19, 2012. That is the day one of my favorite people on Earth, decided to take his own life. My Uncle Jed left behind his wife, and two babies, and an entire extended family who would never be the same after his death.

The following year, another big life event happened. On November 9th, 2013 my Aunt, from the other side of my family, was shot by her husband and killed. These were my first real experiences with death. With losing someone close, and realizing that you would never get to see them again. The only thing left of my Aunt and Uncle are the memories I have of them.

Ever since those two summers, my outlook on photography changed drastically. Sure, photography is a beautiful form of art. But even more so, photography is one of the only ways to preserve the people and things we love.

It has been my goal ever since, to learn and grow as an artist so that I’m able to capture true memories so that everyone can relive those moments that they can’t get back.

Although I am honored to photograph any occasion in your life, I specialize in engagement and wedding photography; simply put… I LOVE love. I love to see, create, spread and capture love in all of its wonderful forms!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s definitely been a road filled with ups and downs but I’ve learned so much along the way. The hardest part has been figuring out the technical side of being a business owner; all the licenses, forms, bills, taxes, etc. It can be a lot to learn about but if I can give any advice about anything it would be to just jump in. Progress is better than perfection, so just start somewhere and it will all fall into place as you go along.

What should we know about Echo Lankford Events & Photography? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a self-taught photographer, and although I love to document everything, I specialize in weddings. I love everything about the wedding industry, and fun fact: I have worked almost every angle of the business. I started out as a wedding caterer for a small family-owned BBQ joint. I then work as a wedding venue property manager where I learned so much about the industry. Last year, I dipped my toes into wedding coordinating as well so I know how all the different vendors work which ultimately help me be the best photographer I can be.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I’ve always loved art and expressing myself creatively. My parents were always really supportive in that and my mom even subscribed to a national geographic magazine when I was was 12 so I could cut out my favorite photos and tape them to my door. My mom is a huge reason I felt able to pursue photography and she always taught me that you can figure out anything you put your mind to.
