Meet Trailblazer Cheyenne Dickerson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheyenne Dickerson.

Cheyenne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was a little girl, fashion has always been extremely relevant in my life. My mom, two sisters and external family members played major roles in creating my love for an exceptional wardrobe with high-quality, classic and edgy pieces. In addition to my love and obsession of all things fashion, being a writer has also been an endearing passion of mine. In high school, I kept a daily diary and loved writing my many thoughts down on paper. Fast forward to college, where I received a communication degree from the University of Oklahoma and served as a fashion writer at a local print publication.

Following that, I completed a three-year teaching stint at my hometown school, and from there, my husband and I moved to Denver to test out city life. Growing up in a town of 1,200 residents where farm animals outnumbered humans, we were eager to try our talents in the mile high city. There, I almost immediately began as a fashion intern at the renowned 303 Magazine serving millions of readers and within one month was promoted to the styling team. From there, I navigated to Senior Editorial Stylist where I curate monthly styled photoshoots, produce style profiles on intriguing trendsetters and work closely with local brands and fashion designers. Apart from that, I also started my own styling business called Style by Chey where I focus on commercial and personal styling services. Together, these two endeavors fuel my passion for fashion and writing.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Throughout my career in the fashion industry, I have been blessed with a pretty smooth road that I am extremely grateful for; however, that’s not to say I haven’t faced challenging moments and seasons of despair. One struggle that consistently presented itself was the rarity of full-time fashion positions. Since writing for fashion in college to now, two jobs have always been a reality of mine. The “normal,” everyday job paid the bills, while the fashion writer and stylist position nourished my creative and fun sides.

For the young women starting out on their own journeys, my piece of advice is to listen to your instincts and take action on your dreams. For me, my dreams consisted of being in a world where fashion and writing co-exist and leaned on each other for understanding. Starting my own business, Style by Chey, was a massive leap of faith and hugely scary, though with an amazing support system, confidence and hustle attitude – a dream of mine was born.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Style by Chey – what should we know?
As the Senior Editorial Stylist for 303 Magazine, I specialize in curating monthly styled editorial shoots for the publication. During those shoots, local models, hairstylists, makeup artists, locations, local boutiques, national clothing stores and Denver designers are utilized.

With Style by Chey, my work is very much the same, where I focus on styling models based on a specific mood or theme. Throughout these ventures, I became known for my styling aesthetic, character and personality. I truly love working with other creatives and seeing a dream come to life through the use of collaboration and configuration. Singular to me is my extremely determined and motivated mindset. I work hard because whatever I produce I want it to be a true, shining reflection of myself, so I do everything I can to ensure success is the only option.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Denver has presented an array of opportunities for me and my business. The amount of support, love and teamwork from fellow creatives makes everything I do worthwhile. Many times, a friend will propose an idea for a collaborative shoot and from there, organic, clever and insightful styling approaches and moods are formed. Throughout these experiences, true creativity and imagination are composed.

In my position, both male and female stylists are and can be successful. I am a believer that the fashion industry is an inclusive and all-embracing enterprise that is big enough for anyone and everyone.
