Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Reed-Baum.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a small farming town in Nevada and was immersed in sports from day one. I ultimately fell in love with the games of volleyball and basketball as well as throwing discus and shot in track. I managed to pull off the craziness of three sports and club volleyball throughout high school thanks to extremely dedicated parents which led me to my decision to commit to Santa Clara University to play volleyball. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and was left with a big decision on what was going to happen next after volleyball life ended.
Some people may understand, but the identity struggles that may surface after dedicating what felt like an entire lifetime to sport can be both overwhelming and liberating at the same time. I decided to continue my education on the path of Speech Pathology and earned my Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Northern Colorado. Throughout my graduate program, I met my husband Ryan who grew up in the Loveland area and we are now settled down in Eaton, Colorado. Shortly after graduation, I started working in a Skilled Nursing Facility to fulfill my passion of helping people and to continue to grow as a professional in the medical industry. I worked full time and slowly moved into PRN work. Why? Well here it goes…
The skilled nursing setting is not all hearts and rainbows and burn out is REAL. Let me tell you. So why didn’t I just choose a different setting you ask? Well, that’s because I was inspired. My husband Ryan is partners with his dad in their family business, “TruLog”. His dad invented and patented a technology that creates steel log siding and I have watched Ryan scale that business over the last four years. I watched him work from his parent’s kitchen table to now working in an office that sits inside a 17,000 sq ft manufacturing building already ready for further expansion—witnessing this whole process of taking an idea and manifesting it into something life-changing made me reevaluate what I wanted to truly do with my life.
The entrepreneurial spirit doesn’t exactly escape once you have felt what it’s like. Plus autonomy and freedom to choose what to do with your time is a gift. So here’s the struggle… has anyone else decided to earn a Master’s degree and then do nothing with it? Have you felt guilty? Confused? Judged? Conflicted? Ya probably… because that was me and still is on those harder days. It would be easier at times just to go to the 9 to 5 and make a consistent paycheck. But it didn’t fully fill my cup and that’s ok! I have sooo many passions and it’s completely possible to find a spot for all of them. So here is what it looks like for me.
1) Real Estate- It had always been a dream of mine to fix and flip houses, mostly in part because I’m obsessed with decorating and designing spaces. I wanted to learn the ins and outs of a real estate transaction and thought that getting my license would only benefit us in the future. Throughout this process, I have found a passion for helping buyers and sellers and for the world of Real Estate. I get to fill my entrepreneurial cup, if you will, with building and growing my real estate business. I am so excited for future projects and future deals that serve my clients and my friends.
2.) NuSkin- Another huge piece of my life’s puzzle is this company that I joined in June of 2017. The whitening toothpaste works folks, let me tell you, and I have learned so much about training and growing and managing with the experience of helping others start their own at home business. Again, it provides freedom and choices. And that fills up the cup.
3.) KDRB Boutique- Yes, I did it. I have started an online boutique and this right here is what gets me sooo freak in excited. This is my “sit at the kitchen table idea turning into a reality”. I get full control over the creative pieces of my business and it energizes me every single day.
4.) PRN work- I will continue to educate myself and keep my license active as an SLP because I did earn this degree for a reason. Each time I take a couple hours to treat patients, I’m reminded of why I chose this field in the first place.
So here’s my unique story and how all the puzzles pieces fit together. There are days I feel like I’m insane and building businesses is no joke, but if I can be the Real Estate agent, the Boutique owner, the leader who can empower others to start their own business, the photographer, the wife, the friend, the daughter, the sister… then well… my cup is full.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the middle of 2019, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition that also contributed to my decision to make the shift and work from home. My ability to focus and concentrate or even have enough energy to get out of bed was shot and I knew I had to do something about it. Thankfully, I have been able to make some changes and have started to feel better!
But aside from health, starting your own business is never as easy as some people think. The consistency and persistence that is needed require support. You just have to surround yourself with likeminded people who believe in your vision to pull yourself out of the slumps.
Please tell us about KDRB Boutique and Turn Key Realty.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I absolutely love where we live. Eaton has the charm I’m familiar with growing up in a small farming town in Nevada. I am comfortable here and it’s so amazing that we are so close to Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Denver, Estes, etc. I feel like you can’t go wrong anywhere in this beautiful state of Colorado.
