Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Laurie Harris.
Rachel Laurie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My dog training journey started 12 years ago when I adopted a scared mangy puppy from the local animal shelter. We called that puppy Sunny, and I have him to thank for my career as a dog trainer. I started by volunteering at the Maxfund as a dog walker and then I found a local trainer to teach and mentor me as a dog trainer. Soon after that I started A Good Feeling Dog Training with a focus on teaching dog owners how to implement positive reinforcement training techniques to improve the quality of their relationship with their dogs. Since then, I have helped thousands of dog owners more effectively communicate with their dogs.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In dog training, it is never black and white. Then you add in the human element and it is certainly a challenge to address both the dog and humans needs in my work as a dog trainer. I truly enjoy connecting with all of my clients and giving them what they need. Being a small business owner has certainly been challenging at times, figuring out how to track my books and market myself to my greatest potential are an ever-evolving work in progress but I am extremely proud of the business I have built over the years and the impact I’ve been able to have in my community.
Please tell us about A Good Feeling Dog Training.
A Good Feeling Dog Training offers a wide scope of dog training services. From in-person training, group classes, specialized boarding, online training courses and my podcast “Disorderly Dogs”, I’ve done my best to offer the services that my clients need. While dog training has tons of variations, my main focus is helping owners of reactive dogs and teaching reliable off-leash skills for adventuring in our great state. My dog training methodology is rooted in science, I stay up to date with the latest research so that I can teach my clients how to implement the most kind, effective training for their dogs. I never use harsh training techniques because I am able to get the desired behavior through positive reinforcement.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I am fortunate enough to be a part of a wonderful network of dog trainers who have supported me along the way. I also owe a lot of credit to my team Jordan and Stephanie who have really helped me take A Good Feeling Dog Training to the next level and every dog that I have had the privilege of working with. I learn something new from every dog that I get to work with.
