Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Rumsey.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Travis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I don’t feel like my story is anywhere near complete. I’ll do my best to explain what I know about the story so far. I grew up in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, the oldest of three, to some really stressed-out parents. My Mom experienced firsthand WW2, escaped East Germany, was disowned by her family and dealt with the trauma of an abusive mother. My Dad, I’m not sure what was up with him. I never found out. He was just generally checked out. They both passed away when I was 41.
Their discomfort with life always perplexed me. I didn’t understand why it had to be so hard. Seeing their pain on a daily basis, and not having any practical way to alleviate it, placed a thorn in my side that I carry to this day. The pain of living with their pain has driven me to find the most useful and practical ways to gain distance and healing from the pain we all inherit in some form or another. I’ve drawn a line in the sand to stop the runaway train of re-traumatization that is rampant in the world.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has certainly become more smooth over the years. I entered adulthood definitely feeling like a fish out of water and fought for a good number of years to find my place in the world. Learning to let go of values that weren’t conducive to my authenticity and my strengths have been the best thing I’ve done for myself. Seeing through and releasing the physical manifestations of a traumatic upbringing has expanded my understanding of what it means to be human.
We all have our burdens. Transforming our burdens into gifts, that we can then share with others, while not necessarily ‘fun,’ can be the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done with our short time month this planet.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I work with people who are at the front lines of making a difference; social service professionals, non-profit leaders, business professionals, as well as people who are deeply committed to their own personal growth. I help them break away from self-defeating patterns, which cause so much debilitating stress. These patterns, created by past experiences which are often long-forgotten, can continue to have a big impact on our lives. Once these no-longer-useful patterns are released, we’re able to connect to the authentic power we already have within ourselves.
I teach a couple of practices, in tandem, Neurosculpting® and TRE®, Tension and Trauma Release Exercises. Anyone can do these practices and they are easy to learn. Once learned, they become tools to use anywhere, anytime, to keep us stress-free and connected to our inspiration and effectiveness. Both practices are based on neuroscience and work with how our bodies and minds naturally perform, which makes them easy to practice. Neither practice relies on bringing up the past, so they’re gentle and accessible for everyone.
My personal growth and freedom through these two practices have been nothing short of wondrous to me. And I see the same results in many others. I teach introductory classes in both modalities to the general public. I also teach and coach individuals privately.
Lately too, I’ve been bringing the power of sound into my practice. Whether used as a passive form of meditation or an energetic booster to intentional mind-shifts, it’s proven to be a fun and powerful practice that I love to share with others. What I love about my work is that it allows me to interact with people as unique individuals, which is how I see them to start with! One of my abilities is to see and connect to the beautiful whole core of each person I meet and hold this out for them to see and feel for themselves. Sometimes it takes a while before they’re able to look at their brilliance, but when they eventually do… man, that’s the best thing in the world to me.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I’ve lived in Denver since the early 80’s and have seen it change dramatically. Despite it getting so expensive to live here, and despite it getting a little overcrowded, the influence of all this new energy has been exciting. I periodically think I should try living somewhere else for a change of scenery and experience, but I can’t seem to pull myself away.
