Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Bellina.
Julie, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My career started in NYC working in advertising and later in marketing for a fashion magazine. Work was stressful and I couldn’t see a future in that industry. My husband was offered a job in San Francisco and we decided to move to San Francisco for change of pace. I was so stressed from my prior jobs that I walked away from marketing completely and focused on starting fresh at the front desk of a day spa. On day one, I had never heard of an Esthetician much less what they did. But after putting in some time and learning the ropes, I eventually worked my way to Spa Director. While that was rewarding, I was drawn to the idea of helping people and providing a relaxing respite for clients. That’s when I decided to go back to school and become an Esthetician.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle was starting Beauty School. I had a lot of resistance. I had gone to a strong undergrad college and had built an impressive work resume in the advertising and publishing world. People questioned why I would go to Beauty School. They were skeptical about my pursuit of a trade vs. a professional career. When I graduated from Beauty School and became a licensed Esthetician, I spent several years working in day-spas not only as an Esthetician but also as a Spa Director. When I become a mom, I decided to open my own studio so I had more control over my hours and the services I could provide to my clients.
Please tell us about The Skin Care Studio.
It’s been over 15 years since I took the leap of faith and decided to become an Esthetician. My business, The Skincare Studio, specializes in Acne care for adults and teens. I am also known for my custom anti-aging facials. With every client, I take the time to understand their history and get to know what their skincare concerns and goals are. This personal approach allows me to create a game plan for skin care treatments and a home care routine that will bring them success. Over the years, I’ve moved away from pampering or luxurious spa services and focused more on results-oriented facial treatments. What my clients value more than anything are results.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Growing up my Granpa lived with us. He used to travel internationally for work and would always bring back amazing soaps and toiletries from all over the world. One of my favorite memories from my childhood was unwrapping the treasures he brought home. I can still smell the soaps to this day!
