Meet Phyllis Harvey of Tri Resonance in Littleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phyllis Harvey.

Phyllis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a native Coloradan who grew up on a local ranch and have been working for a local Sheriff’s Office since 1990. It has always been my passion to give back and help those in my community. I am blessed with a beautiful family, friends and amazing career. However, like many, I have also experienced life’s ups and downs. I began having trouble focusing and experiencing high levels of stress a few years ago. I knew I needed to do something different to take back my life. I dabbled in mindfulness, which helped a lot, but I was still having some difficulties. As a part of this journey, I benefited greatly from the use of music and vibrational sound therapy in my practice. Music and sound are something many can easily relate to. I also read Brene Brown’s book “Daring Greatly”. All life-changing and I realized that I wanted to learn how to provide vibrational sound therapy so I could share it with others to help them relax and heal. In a quick internet search, I found a training that just happened to be coming to a town near me this last December so I took a leap of faith and invested a lot of money to start my company Tri Resonance.

I am still working full time for the Sheriff’s Office along with providing vibrational sound therapy, sound meditations and sound baths in the evenings and on weekends. My website www.TriResonance.com has more information about what vibrational sound therapy is to include the physical and mental health benefits because I know a lot of people have never heard of it. It brings me so much joy when a client tries it for the first time and says, “that was the most relaxing thing I have ever done and it has to be a part of my ongoing self-care!” There are a lot more testimonials on my website that reflect the same.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge that I see coming is finding a location that is outside of my home to offer my services for new clients that is available, affordable, appropriate for what I do and in my community. At times it is also challenging working a very busy full-time career and running a company that is service-oriented. However, I am committed to making it work while keeping balance and taking care of myself. The blessing is that my clients typically want evening and weekend appointments anyway because they too work full time. I figured it would be a slow start and have been nicely surprised at how many clients I am already working with and all the different opportunities that are coming my way that will help even more people.

I love helping people feel better, learn how to manage their stress and take care of themselves. The bonus is that, because of the career I have, I have a lot of training that many other practitioners may not have. For example, my intake form is trauma-informed and I spend a lot of time carefully explaining what happens in the session to make sure the client feels safe, understands the entire process, and can have a deeply relaxing experience. A lot of my clients who come for vibrational sound therapy end up talking a lot about the stress and anxiety in their lives and I feel so fortunate that I can listen and have the skills and knowledge of who to refer them to if they need other professional help.

Please tell us about Tri Resonance.
Tri Resonance’s Moto is You Are Worth It! Self-care is not a luxury; it is a necessity. I am certified and licensed by and use the Vibrational Sound Association’s (VSA) technique called Vibrational Sound Therapy (VST). What is VST: It is a deep relaxation technique that uses a subtle vibration and a sound instrument called a singing bowl. The bowl(s) are strategically placed directly on and around the body and gently rung thus causing the vibration. The gentle sounds and vibrations help to activate the parasympathetic nervous system to relax clients.

Muscle tension is seen to decrease, the mind becomes calm, and the harmful effects of prolonged stress can melt away. The Himalayan bowls used are specifically created for vibrational sound therapy. VST experiences may include physical and emotional benefits such as deep relaxation, reduced stress, beneficial “brain states” similar to what is experienced when practicing mindfulness meditation, yoga and/or tai chi, feelings of mental freshness that can be felt after the session concludes and emotional regulation is improved.

I also offer group sound meditations and sound baths for yoga classes. I incorporate mindfulness in all that I do and work closely with two other partners to offer workshops that blend yoga, meditation and sound.

What sets me apart from others is that I am certified and licensed. Some practitioners are not. By having my license my clients benefit by knowing I have passed a criminal background check, the VSA governing board views me as a credible and reputable practitioner, my license is also an agreement that I will complete continuing education requirements and that I carry liability insurance. I am dedicated to continuing my training and education so that I bring all of this into my practice to create a safe space and thus deepen the relaxation experiences for all that I am blessed to work with. I make sure that everything I am doing is trauma-informed and secular, focusing on the research and evidence-based practices that make it available to all. If someone wants to incorporate faith or spirituality of any kind, they can absolutely do that. If they want to incorporate any mindfulness practice that they already do they can do that. I listen to each client and work hard to individualize the session so that it is what the client wants and can benefit from.

I am also working to provide this modality to first responders since this is my first work family. I know a lot of people think its “woo woo” and I am working hard to help them see that it definitely can be if that is what you want, but it doesn’t have to be. I offer a personalized spa-like experience so that each client experiences real self-care and they leave realizing they need to keep doing it because they feel and see the true benefits so they can live their best life.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory is when my parents surprised my sister and I and took us to Disneyland. I think I was in 4th or 5th grade. This was huge! We never had money to go on vacation, and it was the first time we were on an airplane. It was the best trip because we were old enough to understand what a sacrifice this was, and had the best time ever. Our family is very close and I am really grateful for that because I know not everyone is as fortunate.
