Meet Rebecca Martin-Hart of B.Hart Collection in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Martin-Hart.

Rebecca, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in the Driftless region of Southwestern, Wisconsin on an organic vegetable farm. I have always been in a deep relationship with land and because of that, I have always been inspired by the natural world. I was the little girl with the bonnet and dress covered in mud. I’ve always enjoyed expressing myself through what I wear which leads me to creating durable adornments. At 15 years old, I would wire wrap large agate slices and make necklaces with them.

Then in 2006 at the Dane County Farmers Market, I was introduced to a farmer who raised emu for meat and feathers. I bought a large bag of loose feathers and began to form them into earrings. This practice is still with me today and it is done in reverence for birds and the magic that their feathers hold. I was introduced to seed beads and metalsmithing in 2015. There is something deeply gratifying about forming raw metal into shapes and manipulating it into a wearable work of art. It was after I found metal that I decided to start my business and work for myself. B.Hart Collection has been a rich opportunity for me to feed my creative life in a way that brings joy to people.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road varies between smooth and bumpy. Building a business from the ground up without any business experience is quite challenging and I am still smoothing bumps and uncovering blind spots. For me, the smoothest part of the journey is in the creation process. Some of my other bumps include; keeping up with my online presence, carving out time to do non-creative business tasks, work/life balance, and creating a schedule that allows for creative play.

Please tell us about B.Hart Collection.
The focus of my business has been creating big, funky statement earrings that make those who wear them feel confident and powerful. In fact, all earrings that I have produced have earned the nickname by the community, Becca earrings. I put a lot of love and positive intention into each piece that I make and I craft the earrings and sometimes rings + necklaces, with my own two hands. It is very important to me that I produce each adornment because it is a living ritual and I think that is what sets me apart.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far was being featured in Aloc Media’s makers series. It was so enlivening to work with other creatives and share my story.
