Meet Tracy Gowler of Your Health Made Simple in Colorado Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Gowler.

Tracy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I help women over 40 improve the way they live with autoimmune disease and I am extremely passionate about what I do. My own health journey started about 40 years ago. The family had made a big move from Toronto, Ontario to small-town Texas and it was an extremely stressful event for the family and myself being 16 years old. I wasn’t very nice to my parents, haha.

After the move, I started getting sick all the time with tonsillitis. I developed allergies almost immediately after the move which were significant. The doctors decided I needed to have my tonsils out but they couldn’t get me well enough to have the surgery. I was on antibiotics for six months just to be able to have the surgery. I understand now that the problem was Epstein Barr Virus and not my tonsils but I did get better after the surgery. Although the health of my gut was definitely compromised by the antibiotics.

This was just the beginning. Every decade brought new symptoms that the medical community couldn’t explain. Hives, severe stomach pain, muscle cramping, rashes, heart palpitations, hair loss, excessively heavy menstrual cycles, headaches, brain fog, shakes, noise sensitivity, smell sensitivity, weight loss, weight gain, etc. By the time I was 45, I could barely walk up the stairs in my house without having to stop to catch my breath.

I went home to see my Grandmother for the last time in 2013 and ended up in the hospital. It was my gallbladder and they wanted me to have the removal surgery. I refused. I had reached my No More. I took the painkillers and antibiotics and got myself home. I started the process of changing my diet. It was a great start and I felt so much better but my health issues weren’t over. And at this point, I still didn’t know what was causing it all.

The antibiotics that I took to improve the gallbladder put me into a full body yeast infection. In the process of being at the doctor 5 or 6 times to find out what was going on, they discovered that my hemoglobin was at 60% of what it should be. I had an emergency ablation to cauterize the cells in my uterus to stop my monthly cycle. I couldn’t lose anymore blood. They wanted to take my lady parts but were afraid I might have a heart attack or a stroke on the table. The surgery provided immediately given relief. My poor body had been struggling with it for three weeks every month for over ten years. I was starting to get back my quality of life.

By chance, I had my hormones and thyroid tested and discovered that I had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis which is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid. When I started the research, it all made so much sense and I was starting to understand what it was going to take to heal. I found a certification program in Functional Diagnostic Nutrition and enrolled. It truly was the last piece of the puzzle. It taught me how to test to determine what is driving the illness and to support my body in the right way so it could heal. I put myself through the program and made incredible progress in healing.

I realized that there are so many other women out there, lost in the medical community for years without answers and decided that I had to take everything I had learned and help as many women as possible regain their quality of life too. That is how Your Health Made Simple was born.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. When my clients ask how long it will take, I tell them it depends on how much of an onion they are. They can be an easy onion to peel or a very difficult onion to peel. I was an extremely difficult onion to peel. I have the most extreme genetic mutation of the MTHFR gene and it makes detoxing for my body very difficult. I have had to work hard, modifying my life to support the detox process.

I am a Type A person so I stress my body more than most. My stress response is burned in unfortunately, increasing adrenal activity and cortisol production. This contributes to a lot of gut dysfunction and I have had to go through protocols four separate times to manage gut pathogens. Basically, parasites, bad bacteria and fungus-like yeast.

I had silver fillings which contain mercury since I was about seven. Because my body struggles with detox, it was hanging onto the mercury in my tissues. I had eight times the level of mercury that is recommended in the body. I had to do two separate protocols to just get the level down to something normal. I had to work with a biological dentist to get the fillings out so it didn’t damage my body further. And I am in the process of rebuilding the balance of bacteria in my gut right now again. It has definitely been a process but everything I learn helps me support my clients better.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I specialize in autoimmune with a focus on women over 40. And I am an educational speaker on how stress affects women’s health. I am known for being open and honest with my clients. I don’t believe in candy coating what it is going to take. I like to prepare them mentally for the changes because they can be hard. It is important to Mind the Mind.

I love watching my clients improve. They have been in a fight for their lives for years in most cases. They come to me sometimes as a last resort and they are surprised by the progress they make. It’s hard work but with commitment, the body really does begin the healing process.

I think what sets me apart from other practitioners is that I have an engineering and project management background. It has helped me understand the structure of healing and the steps that have to be taken and in what order. I have structured my programs with that in mind. We don’t play pin the tail on the donkey. Every step is made with the help of the client learning how to listen to the whispers of their bodies. We work on that a lot too. It is important to understand the whispers before the body starts screaming.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I do actually. I think my dad really wanted a boy. I had a matchbox car set and a Rifleman rifle to play with when I was a little kid. Don’t get my wrong, I had barbies too but I always loved being out in the garage tinkering with my dad. I pulled my engine with my dad when I was 17. I loved being out there with grease in my toenails. It was the beginning of my career as an engineer. It was great.
