Life and Work with Sara Zimmerman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Zimmerman.

Sara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey started without knowing what would come of it. I was at a very dark spot in my life and knew that I could not live in that mental state any longer. I found myself making excuses and not caring for myself like I should have been. It wasn’t until I realized that I am the only person who can make my dreams come true. I will be completely honest with you, I have not always been a healthy person and I still am working on improving my health currently. Over the years, I have learned that your overall health is so much more than the way you look and I personally wish health was not compared to how we look at all. Health, in my opinion, is how you feel about yourself and your life. It is having the energy, mental space, and physical ability to do what you want in life without limitations.

Originally, I thought I was just going to be a chiropractor and help people who suffered from chronic low back pain. Then, I started learning how chiropractic is so much more than that. Chiropractic is a lifestyle. It is allowing the body to heal itself by providing the power it needs to function properly. While I was going to chiropractic school, I started to work on myself both mentally and physically. I realized that I had developed so many bad habits while growing up and that I had a lot of underlying issues inhibiting my energy and mood. I started studying functional medicine and fell in love with the results. I did not think that changing my diet and taking supplements would be able to have such a huge impact on my life. I went from needing coffee all the time, losing my hair, awful periods, and so many other bad things to being able to live freely. My own health journey has brought me to where I am today. I want people to feel happy again and have hope for their own health.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting to this point in my life was a very difficult journey for me. I had to grow up at a very young age. All I had was a dream that everyone told me I could not accomplish. I had to work multiple jobs while going through school which meant I did not have the normal college experience. I had to give up a lot including friendships in order to prioritize my time. I wanted to give up so many times and just live like a normal twenty years old. Especially when so many people told me that what I was doing wouldn’t work. I had to make a lot of sacrifices and I would always ask myself what is more important? I lived on a very strict budget and rarely splurged on anything. For example, most of my clothes are still from high school. I remember finishing my first year of grad school and wanting a gym membership. A gym membership was $40 a month which meant I had to cut my weekly grocery budget by $10 so I could afford to go. I am a firm believer that if you truly want something you will figure out a way to make it happen. Which means, yeah if I truly wanted to build relationships than I could have, but I was selfish and decided to focus on my own goals during graduate school. I could have easily worked for someone else and not have to work as hard to be able to start my own practice, but I knew that is not what I wanted. I wanted to start my own practice so I could treat patients the way I wanted to without being told what to do. I wanted to be able to spend time with my patients. I also wanted to incorporate functional medicine into my practice along with chiropractic. So, after all those years of doing everything in my power to make this dream come true, I made it happen. I opened my own practice and I absolutely love my job. I can honestly say that all of those years of hard work paid off. I am truly blessed with how my life is now and sometimes I feel like I am literally dreaming.

My advice to all women in the world is this. It does not matter where you came from or what you have had to deal with. The only thing that matters is that you know what you want and you find a way to make it happen. You are the only person who can control how your future will be. Do not make excuses and do not say “I wish that could be me” because, girlfriend- it can be you! You might have to try harder than someone else, but that is what makes the feeling of accomplishment that more powerful!

Please tell us about Futra Health And Spine.
I am a chiropractor who also practices functional medicine. I specialize in psychosomatic pain, gut health, and period problems. I am proud to help people get their lives back and feel normal again without all of the pain and suffering. I love challenges and figuring out the missing puzzle pieces in people’s health.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Finding a mentor is great and can help during confusing times. My biggest advice would be to be true to yourself and have a strong foundation of your own beliefs and goals so you are able to work toward exactly what you want.
