Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Hurst.
Rachel, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had originally wanted to be a doctor. I did IB in High school and worked in a lab in college, but something wasn’t clicking, and I had one of many meltdowns. At the perfect time, a friend convinced me to start a fashion group on campus. Our first show was horrible. No one attended, it was in a dinky art studio and I did not know what I was doing, but at the moment, I had felt so alive and knew that I had to pursue it no matter what. I switched majors to Theatre and convince two of my professors to allow me to take all of these one-credit classes with them where I could learn everything that they knew about fashion. We started with a fashion show on campus that had maybe 50 people in attendance and I ended up securing an office, funding for our club and was able to have our shows in the ball room with nearly 500 people attending. From there, once I graduated, I decided to open my own business and now make custom designs for clients as well as my ready to wear line.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No road is smooth really, And it usually has tones of forks and pot holes. I have failed and I have wanted to give up so many times. I have had a few clients not pick up their dresses with no explanations and I have had clients change their dresses. But those were only a few and I learned a lot and tried to put my client first to understand the necessary changes. Owning a business is not easy, and freedom is not free.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
A lot of our clients come to us because they cannot find the perfect wedding dress or special event piece. Either it’s not offered in their size, it doesn’t have everything they were hoping it did, or they are non-traditional and have unique tastes that are not offered to them. Either way, they see the value of having a fantastic piece that is designed for them, with them in mind. I am most proud of not giving up and always being creative in pursuing the next chapter of my business. What sets me apart is that fashion can be pretty superficial at times, but our brand prides itself in truly becoming a friend to our client and we try to go above in beyond in support and care for them as well as design.
What were you like growing up?
I was and still am pretty shy, reserved yet goofy and a little bit clumsy. I am a type-A personality and am a perfectionist. I hate to lose and am super competitive. I always loved clothing and worked several jobs as a kid to have some of my financial security. Coming from a. single parent, I helped to make ends meet but also started a babysitting business that took off, so I loved being an entrepreneur at a young age.
