Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Sisneros.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashley. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was raised in Denver Colorado in a mid-class income household where it involved drug abuse and alcoholism, where I would see people coming in and out of my house. Both my parents struggled to get past that life years ago but my mother has she’s a strong independent lady and I believe I get my motivation and hustle from her. She’s the one who always believed in me and still does until this day. She always sticks by my side and encourages me to do what I love despite anything.
I grew up always passionate about makeup beauty and fashion. I used to wear makeup in middle school and people would call me plastic because they said I looked fake with makeup on lol. When I got to 8th grade a lot of girls would wear makeup, high heels, and nice clothes. My parents at that time had already split up, but I wanted nice things like that and they both struggled to give me things I wanted, I started working at the rec center it was through a program for young kids that my mom got me and my sisters in. When I got my first paycheck the first store I went to was Sephora that was my first makeup store I entered besides the isle at Walmart.
After I went there, I was immediately obsessed. I also seen people doing makeup at MAC and I said to myself I want to do that one day. My older sister would do her makeup all the time and I always wanted to be like her and wear makeup, I would even steal her makeup bag lol. She used to get really mad at me but eventually, she used to allow me to do my makeup with her makeup. I would practice on myself, my childhood friends and my cousin who I was close with. Their parents used to get so mad and pissed at me for trying to put makeup on them or try to cut there hair. I even invited my neighbor next door to come over and told her if I can cut and style her hair, I told her my sister showed me lol, she came over I did her makeup and cut her hair and her mom was so furious lol. When I would do my makeup, I would get frustrated because I couldn’t do it right. Eventually, I learned but still needed practice, and I still practice everyday to get better at what I do. In this industry either it be makeup, beauty or something else, you will always learn something new everyday, and there’s always different techniques on how to do a look or how to apply it. When I got older, I would still do makeup but wasn’t practicing as much because I had gained so much weight and I didn’t feel pretty. I was in a really dark place.
Some years later, I lost a lot of weight and began to get back into my passion for makeup and beauty. It was like my therapy and I would get lost in it and nothing else mattered. I recently started to get more in-depth with makeup and doing different looks and challenges then I’m used to but I loved it. I love getting different challenges thrown at me. I have got better and better at makeup recently since before and I have grown a lot but, I still continue to practice all the time. I will continue to strive and get better at makeup. I recently got invited to display my makeup for a showcase with RAW ARTIST. I was ecstatic when I was chosen and I can’t wait to enjoy that experience. I Started my makeup page on Instagram and Facebook in December 2019 because my mom, my immediate family and a teacher at my son’s school would say you do such a great job you should start doing people’s makeup and charge them or start your own makeup page or YouTube channel. I have yet done a YouTube channel but that’s my goal this year
(2020). Beauty has always been my dream, either it be fashion, hair or makeup. Nobody told me it would be difficult putting it on or the competition in this industry. My goal in life is to one day take all my hard work and put it into something I can say I worked hard for (my own salon). I eventually want to attend beauty school and pursue my love for makeup as a career, and also attend business school afterwards so I can make my dream come true and own my own salon one day. I know it takes time and patience. We all have to start somewhere and work hard for what we want. With IG, Facebook, Twitter YouTube, etc. it’s huge with all kinds of different things people are passionate about, seeing different people all over the internet doing makeup is so inspirational to me, I save pictures of other MUA and try to recreate that look.
I love to practice makeup on my nieces, my mom and my sisters. It gives me a lot of practice doing makeup on others because I do get a little terrified that I’ll mess up on someone else. I’ve come along way from doing makeup for over ten years. My makeup has Definitely become a lot better over the years just like any other person. You don’t start off the best right away; you have to work your way up practice and practice. I’m enthusiastic and eager to see what the future has in store for me and my dream and to also be the best beauty influencer I can be.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say that this road hasn’t been easy. My journey with doing makeup has been a rollercoaster over the years for sure, whether it be taking a break for a while or just not practicing enough to get better. There is times where I have got bad feedback from people. In this industry, there’s a lot of competition and I’m a very competitive person. It’s really hard when you try your best to get noticed but other people don’t support you or notice your work. I try my hardest every time I do a look and when it comes to social media, some people can be judgmental on your work and it’s not fair because you’re doing a look that inspires you.
This industry needs more positive people who can lift you up when doing a makeup look so you can feel confident about your work and be positive about your art. Everyone starts off somewhere and gets better and better when they practice a lot. I do have a lot of positive supporters that follow me and without them I’m nothing. My advice for young women starting in this industry is just to follow your dreams if you want to become a professional MUA one day do it strive for it, nothing can or should stop you from reaching your dream. Despite the negative people in the world because at least one time in your life, you’ll get them every so often, keep striving to give it your all and practice, practice prove them all wrong. If you have time on your hands to practice and do different looks, try it and don’t be scared to get out of your comfort zone.
what should we know about Beauty by Ash? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My favorite makeup look to do is anything dramatic, colorful, Halloween, SFX makeup and very light/natural makeup. I have so many different makeup looks I love. I always love to do makeup that involves feelings. Whatever I’m feeling, either it be sad, happy, mad or bored, lol I’ll do a look based on how I’m feeling that’s what sets me apart from others in a unique way. I also love to do holiday/seasons makeup anytime there’s a holiday or a new season. I always create a makeup look involving that holiday for example Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, summer/spring.
I have been asked to do many different occasions such as bridal, prom, Halloween, birthday parties, etc., but at that time, I wasn’t well experienced. If you asked me now, I wouldn’t hesitate lol. I just wanted to gain some experience on my family members first before I tried on other people. When doing a makeup look, I love to add other props into my work such as wigs, diamonds, feathers, hats, etc. Using different props really makes my makeup looks stand out and it’s more eye-catching. I love using different products with makeup and making the makeup look unreal, unique and different. I’m excited to see what Beauty by Ash has in store for my future with gaining a lot more experience and striving for the best.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
Instagram, Facebook and YouTube are resources that helped me along my journey. When I was younger, I started watching Makeup tutorials and learned from YouTubers to apply makeup or do different hairstyles. I would also turn to Instagram for makeup looks or inspiration. I have a lot of beauty influencers I follow on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube that I find very talented at what they do. I find that social media and social networking is a great source when trying to get your makeup out there. I have been contacted by some beauty influencers who tell me my makeup looks are very inspirational to them and to hear that is beyond this world. It’s amazing that a lot of beauty influencers recognize my work and encourage me to keep practicing, especially people who have thousands of followers and already known for what they do.
