Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew White.
Matthew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After a nasty injury as a young adult, I was left with two options: just deal with all the pain, or take the sketchy meds the doctors prescribed me. I desperately wanted to ease my pain, but I didn’t want to risk forming a habit with the pain pills. There had to be another way. That’s when I began to look into something that I had once viewed only as gimmick, medical marijuana. At this point, I had always assumed that the term ‘medical’ had only been applied to marijuana to help in legalization efforts, but with just a little research, I found all sorts of surprising information. Before you could say CBD, I was already working in a medical marijuana grow facility and helping other people from all walks of life with alternatives to traditional (and often dangerous) pharmaceutical drugs.
Not long after that, I began to make YouTube videos about various studies and laws related to marijuana, so people everywhere could easily find the information that had once been so helpful to me. Now my channel has been watched for over 1 million minutes, in countries all over the world. I’ve been lucky enough to have helped people with everything from PTSD to kicking the nasty pain pills the doctors once tried to give me. My goal is to put a stop to all the misleading stereotypes associated with cannabis users and spread useful information that can help people live happier and healthier lives.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a very rewarding journey, but it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. There is a ‘WeedTuber’ around every corner, and since a large portion of that content consists of people just doing bong rips until they cough up a lung, there are some pretty intense YouTube bots that flag and remove cannabis content in the hopes of keeping kids safe and lawyers happy. I have had videos removed that simply explained Colorado’s marijuana laws. I had a video removed that was warning people of the dangers of black-market THC vape carts, the ones a few people got very sick and even died from.
Although I am thankful to have a platform that allows me to reach so many people, it is frustrating to think that if that video wouldn’t have been removed, it could have stopped someone from getting very sick or maybe even dying. Then you find that there is a large audience who want only those videos of things like ’50g bong rip of doom’, so now you have to find a happy balance between entertaining and informative. I also started with no equipment or experience and chose a subject matter that is basically impossible to monetize on YouTube. I just wanted to help people that were in a situation I was once in and didn’t really give it any thought to the fact that I didn’t know what I was doing and needed pricey camera equipment. I took it one step at a time. I’ve come a long way, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made, and I’m excited for what the future has in store.
Please tell us about The Strain Show.
The Strain Show is there to answer all the questions people have ever had about cannabis. As states continue to legalize cannabis for medical and recreational use, more and more people are gaining access to marijuana for the very first time. There are so many new options, strains, and products that many people don’t know where to begin. Even some seasoned weed lovers are left feeling overwhelmed the first time they visit a dispensary. That’s where I come in.
On the Strain Show, I teach people new and fun facts about weed every week. I also do product and strain reviews to help you keep up with the rapidly evolving world of cannabis products. I want to help people that may be in the same boat I was once in, who are looking to see if cannabis could help them, their child or a loved one enjoy a higher quality of life. I even show people what it’s like behind the scenes at my job as a medical marijuana grower. The Strain Show is the most comprehensive marijuana channel on YouTube, combining education and science, with fun and entertainment. I am proud to have helped so many people find a path to safer alternatives to traditional treatments that may not have worked for them and to put a smile on so many people’s faces.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My favorite thing about Denver (besides the fact I can see the mountains from almost anywhere) is the people. I always meet such interesting, talented, kind, and all-around amazing people everywhere in our city. We have such a diversity of people from all over the place, and a vibe that I think is hard to find in other cities. What I’m not a huge fan of is the endless summer construction. My entire street was in different stages of destroyed from the beginning of spring until the start of winter.. not exactly convenient. Small price to pay to live in such a beautiful place.
