Thanks for sharing your story with us Falan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In medical school, I was fascinated by Anesthesia. So I became an anesthesiologist. We provide pain relief for major procedures and small ones as well. Following residency, I did a pediatric anesthesia fellowship in Boston. In pediatric anesthesia, you use inhaled gases to put children to sleep. We would also use pure nitrous oxide to place IVs in children as well. This was the first time I appreciated that nitrous oxide (laughing gas) was excellent at relieving cutaneous (skin) pain.

Fast forward a few years, and some of my friends are having a discussion about the pain of Brazilian waxing. I had never had the opportunity to try it myself, but as an anesthesiologist, I started thinking about how I would treat that pain. There were so many options, from going all the way to sleep and intubating, to placing an IV and giving narcotics. But all of them were too risky for the benefit of hair removal. Then I thought about giving just nitrous oxide, and I thought it was the perfect anesthetic for the occasion. Nitrous oxide is very short-acting. So people can drive themselves home. It does not put a person to sleep, so they can eat beforehand. It has few side effects, and it is not addictive. In fact, nitrous oxide is America’s longest-running inhaled anesthetic. It was first demonstrated to relieve pain in 1844. And though it was not as strong as Ether and is not potent enough for big procedures, it is the only inhaled anesthetic that remains in use today. Best of all, it makes people laugh, or at least giggle, most of the time.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
So many struggles; I worked full time as an anesthesiologist as the company grew, so time was always an issue. We moved three times in the first year until we found the perfect location in the Highlands. I was not sure what the rules were for giving laughing gas with waxing, so I wrote to the Colorado Medical Board and the Colorado Office of Barber and Cosmetology for guidance. Running a business has a lot of moving parts that I was not ready for. There is advertising, financing, staffing, and training, but also payroll and inventory, and just keeping the place clean. What complicates matters is that BALD does all forms of hair removal. We are the only medical spa that I know of that does waxing, laser, and electrolysis under one roof, as well as botox and fillers and facials. Only at bald can a person get their back lasered, with electrolysis of the tattoo on their back, and then their chest waxed. Each service line has different considerations that must be attended to in the pursuit of excellence. So it has been a juggle to keep customers BALD. Sometimes I feel like an octopus. Then coronavirus happened.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with BALD – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are the only medical spa that I know of that does waxing, laser, and electrolysis under one roof, as well as botox and fillers and facials. Only at BALD can a person get their back lasered, with electrolysis over their tattoos, and then get a chest waxed. Traditionally, you have to go to one place to wax, another place to laser, and good luck finding electrolysis. We staff fully licensed experts for each service we provide and use top-shelf products. Customer satisfaction is a priority and it is what I am most proud of. I lied, I am most proud of how well it works. It is hard to describe, but nitrous oxide really takes the bite out of waxing, and clients are thrilled at the results.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now, I just look forward to Coronavirus being over and us re-opening, but in the future, I would like to expand into more markets. Everyone removes hair from somewhere. It shouldn’t inspire fear. Why cry with them when you can laugh with us. BALD is the future of hair removal.
