Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Clouse.
Lauren, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At 18, I had a vision that I wanted to pursue a career in beauty. I moved to Los Angeles to work as a Make-Up Artist. I had already accomplished school to be an Esthetician and my desire at the time was to learn as much about beauty, film, character and special FX makeup as I could. Skincare is obviously the foundation to any make-up application, but at the time, I set it on the back-burner. This was not the start of my admiration for the industry. I was interested in beauty early on. Most of my childhood and teenage years were spent feeling critical of myself, very body and self-conscious, conflicted with my own identity. That is when I experimented with make-up and beauty rituals. It made me feel good, so I never looked back.
Today I am two years in owning my business and it was the greatest decision I ever made. I work with the most amazing clients and am continuing to grow. I proudly have my own beauty studio in Glendale located inside Lash The City. I worked extremely hard and juggled four jobs at once to get myself to start this business two years ago. I wanted to create an inspiring and positive place that holds no judgement, where every person who comes in feels safe no matter their age, race, sex, orientation, gender, etc. My clients come to amplify their natural beauty as well as their mood. Whether it’s to achieve fuller brows through permanent make-up, fluffy lash extensions or a trial for bridal make-up – my goal is to create genuine connections with my clients and make sure they feel and look amazing walking out the door.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
All of my hard work has been passionate and rewarding. I have challenges but I always accept and push through them. There have been struggles, financial stresses, and obstacles in balancing my personal and professional lives but my reward is much greater than any trial. The advice I have for others starting their journey is to create a positive and motivated mindset. If you want to go after something, make an effort to contribute to it every single day. To achieve any dream takes passion and dedication. You may have tough moments but to call it your own has a sweetness unmatched.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lauren Denver Beauty – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am an artist. I specialize in brow shaping (permanent make-up, wax and tint, lamination), lashes (extensions, lifting and tinting) and make-up artistry with a background in character make-up, bridal and beauty. Most of my connections were made working for MAC and NARS at Nordstrom allowing me to work on a large number of clients for years while making customer service my first priority. I am most proud of my constant dedication to my business and my clients. What sets me apart is my genuine desire to always provide a quality, consistent service and connection with each client.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My advice is to keep an open mind and maintain integrity, so you always feel proud and confident speaking on your business. It is a huge part of my life, so I am networking frequently whether it’s on social media, Instagram and Facebook Groups, collaborating with my client’s businesses or offering them rewards through referral. What has worked for me is word of mouth and actively handing out business cards. Denver has an active community and any time/any place is an opportunity to drop your business card or meet new people.
