Meet Trailblazer Allison Song

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Song.

Allison, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My creative journey began about seven years when I first started selling handmade accessories. At the time, my shop was called Flower Crown Society, where I specialized in flower crowns and hair accessories. My mission was to help other women feel brave and beautiful while wearing such bold accessories. Fast forward a few years and after seeing flower crowns hit the fast fashion market, I felt like I needed to pivot and rebrand with a new name and look that I could personally evolve with. Coincidentally at the time, I had also been digging a little deeper into my South Korean roots and realized how little I knew of my family history and background. I felt convicted to tie my brand and personal history together as a way to raise cultural awareness, share stories, and inspire other women to fully embrace their identities. From there, Heritage & Bloom was born.

Has it been a smooth road?
I try my best to maintain a positive attitude with my business, in the midst of roadblocks and challenges, but I definitely experienced many setbacks throughout my journey! When I first started out, I was young, naive, and excited. The energy was amazing to start with, but I definitely feel like I could have taken proper steps earlier on like registering my business or receiving business advice from mentors. There are a lot of free resources for entrepreneurs that I wish I had taken advantage of earlier on!

For women who are starting out, I would highly recommend networking and connecting with anyone and everyone you possibly can. I remember sending countless emails out to brands, both small and large, to see if anyone would want to collaborate. Thankfully, I received a lot of positive feedback and those collaborations have really set the foundation of how I treat my business today: with gratitude for community.

We’d love to hear more about Heritage & Bloom.
My specialty right now is polymer clay jewelry. I love to take ordinary shapes and create them into something fun, bold, and unique for customers to enjoy. I’m really proud that I was able to use my South Korean heritage to turn it into a collection (“TAEGEUKGI”) and that I could share a little bit more about my story in hopes of inspiring others to do the same.

Currently, I am really honored and proud to be donating fabric face masks to frontline healthcare and essential workers in the midst of COVID-19. I have taken a little break from sewing my headwraps and have been focusing on the masks to better protect our frontline workers!

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I found that networking at my pop up markets have been super valuable. I love getting to share experiences and advice with other makers who are also on the same type of journey as I am. Being an entrepreneur can definitely be lonely and isolating at times, so having other friends who can relate are essential!
