Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Lamb.
Sandy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was out on a hike yesterday morning with my 18-year-old daughter, who is off to University of Colorado, Boulder, in the fall. We were discussing potential majors and what she wanted to do “when she grew up”. She stopped me dead in my tracks when she asked, “Mom, do you believe in destiny?” I replied, “what do you mean?” She said, I believe everything happens for a reason, but do you think that there is something that we are all destined to do in our life no matter what happens along the way?
My reply: I too believe that everything happens for a reason. I didn’t always, but I now have the benefits of many years of wisdom and faith to know that I was destined to become a business/executive coach working with women to empower them by learning to lead with emotional intelligence.
From the time of my birth, when I was adopted by Ray and Lois through Catholic Charities, I have felt worthy because I was chosen among all the children in the nursery that day. Fate could have, undoubtedly, taken a far worse turn for me. I am blessed to have been chosen and to have felt unconditional love every day.
After years of studies and earning an MBA in International Business, working as a project manager on signature projects all over the world, I jumped off the cliff in January 2018 and became an entrepreneur and business owner. Fear and doubt were there, but courage and support from my family allowed me to persevere. I can honestly say it was the greatest decision of my life; right up there with becoming a mother to three beautiful children who inspire me every day to live out my dreams, in hope that they will someday live out their destiny.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the life of a business owner, there are stretches of smooth road, but there are also potholes along the way. The key is to make sure that the potholes, while they may slow you down, don’t stop you from continuing to move forward.
I would say the biggest obstacle for most entrepreneurs, especially at the beginning, is mindset. There is a reason that this is one of the first modules that I go over with my clients because it is foundational to their growth. Successful people live their lives based on the laws of achievement, including self-control, cause and effect and belief. Simply stated, positive thoughts lead to positive results and if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will either.
Please tell us about Altitude Business Coaching.
My company is Altitude Business Coaching. It is no coincidence that the acronym (ABC) is also the initials of my children’s first names. (Ainslee, Brendan and Caitlyn) They were my inspiration for eventually finding a work-life blend and a path that would allow them to start and finish at the same high school. In my corporate career, we moved to 7 different states and they sacrificed for me. Once the teenage years hit, finding stability for them was more important than me continuing to progress up the corporate ladder.
I believe in a world where leaders model emotionally intelligent behavior to transform the way their teams collaborate and grow both personally and professionally. Often times, while working on nuclear power, telecommunications, homeland security and chemical weapons destruction projects, I was the only woman at the table. Through assessments, keynote speaking and tailored executive coaching programs, I help women in male-dominated industries to gain self-confidence in their ability to inspire and influence others by their authentic leadership style.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Executive coaching is something that has been around for a long time. However, with any new trends, it takes time for people to become true believers. I’ve been so thrilled that with my most recent clients, their companies have been willing to invest in them and hire an executive coach for their career development. It shows greater acceptance in corporate America of our value.
I believe in the next five years, coaching will overtake consulting. I do both, but I find greater joy in coaching because it’s more sustainable. Anyone can hire a consultant to get something accomplished, but if you don’t grow your own knowledge and development, you will always have to rely on others. Coaching allows me to ask targeted questions, engage active listening and pull the answers that lie deep within my clients to the surface. 90% of the time, they KNOW what they need to do, they just need help navigating uncharted waters.
