Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Cummings.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Charlie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It was a meeting with a friend of mine after four months of being back in Denver from Salt Lake City, where I was laid off from a position which I had moved there for. I was not having much success with the job search, especially being able to stay in Colorado and I decided to call a friend of mine in real estate. I never thought of being an entrepreneur but it really crossed my mind given all the adversity I had faced in corporate environments. We met for coffee a month or so later and I committed I would take the class and get licensed and within six weeks of that meeting, I hung my license with Keller Williams Realty Downtown.
Has it been a smooth road?
I remember this saying when I started that an entrepreneur is willing to work 80 hrs to avoid working 40 hrs. For me, when you are called and passionate about something, your work, your clients, time doesn’t matter as much. As a realtor, you tend to be available quite more than the average 9-5 W2 employee. However, there is a great sense of accomplishment that I’m having a real impact on the lives of my clients and their future livelihood by the investment strategies I’m advising them on. The other challenge is the emotional roller coast that all real estate agents endure, even in commercial real estate. Things can change rapidly, and people don’t always use the knowledge and data provided to make the most informed decisions. I think for me personally it’s building that trust where a client really does value your perspective and advice. I’ve also learned that its perfectly OK to say “no,” if your value systems don’t align.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work as a commercial realtor with KW Commercial, which is part of Keller Williams, one of the largest real estate firms in the world known for being at the top for training. I specialize in investment sales and leasing in the Colorado market. I would say what separates me apart from my competition is my entrepreneurial creativity, my intellectual curiosity, my passion for connecting people.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Yes! I see many of my peers leaving the industry as technology continues to disrupt the industry. Virtual meetings and showings will also be more of a common practice. I see great opportunities for the rise of small business owners with a continued consolidation of companies and new potential exit plans for employees. I am excited about the future of commercial real estate more than ever.
