Today we’d like to introduce you to Vincent Carmellini.
Vincent, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my business in 2014. The inspiration was basically a math formula; the stress of starting my own business was far more manageable than the stress of working for others. At some point, unless you’re at the top, you can’t control company culture. I spent way too much time in unhealthy environments trying to make them more positive and decided the only way I can really change the culture was to start new and start fresh.
Has it been a smooth road?
There is no secret to success here, just a lot of hard work, perseverance, and dedication. Owning an independent health care business is really difficult and starting a new brand from scratch was years in the making. The industry does not favor small businesses or “outside the box” thinkers. There were definitely times that I thought it was not worth it or questioned whether the sacrifices were going to pay off, but there are some advantages to being stubborn and I really hate to fail. I had a vision and an idea of how I wanted to practice and I would not have it any other way. Also, my wife has been very supportive and in my corner through it all.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Metropolitan Physical Therapy story. Tell us more about your practice.
Metropolitan Physical Therapy is a private outpatient physical therapy practice that specializes in orthopedic, spine, sports medicine, motor vehicle accidents, and vestibular care. I would like to be known as the office with excellent customer service and exceptional results. At the end of the day, what really matters is that the client has a great experience with my team and we are successful at solving whatever orthopedic and health problem that is bothering them. I am most proud to have a great team of professionals that works extremely well together. I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My strategic bet, based on the current political environment, is that as health care costs shift increasingly onto the consumer, there will be greater demand for talented clinicians who know how to provide effective services and eliminate wasteful procedures. The biggest waste of health care dollars is on services that are not appropriate or do not help people get better.
Hence, the advantage will be the provider who can get it right the first time. The literature on low back pain is clear in this area. Get to the right provider first, and the long term costs on the health care system and patient are controlled. That’s where Metropolitan Physical Therapy fits in: we are the right first provider for non-surgical orthopedic and spine pain. For every $1 spent at Metropolitan Physical Therapy in 2019, we saved $2-3 dollars somewhere else in the healthcare system for patients not needing or seeking expensive “downstream” costs such as surgery, imaging, and medications.
