Meet Cristina Del Hoyo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Del Hoyo.

Cristina Del Hoyo is a Denver based artist who is originally from Malaga, Spain. Her love for art and color started at an early age when she began exploring different artistic disciplines such as drawing, painting and photography. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Granada, Spain, in 2009.

Cristina’s artwork is inspired by personal experiences and it is intended to be a bridge between the inside and outside worlds. For her, art is a universal language in which, through her emotional landscapes, she can connect in a deep way to anyone in the world. The artist’s main focus right now is to create a point of contact between frontiers and realities that touch for a moment through her images, establishing the start of a dialog. She believes in the power of vulnerability and how impactful sharing your story and emotions can be on a personal level and to our community and society. She believes in the therapeutic power of art and has shared what she has learned in almost 20 years of her artistic journey. She developed and delivered an art program called “Paint Your Life” for children and teens in rural Guatemala in 2018 and 2019 based on this principle of the power of vulnerability and using art for personal exploration and growth.

Cristina has exhibited in Barcelona, Granada and Denver. During her time in Colorado, she has accomplished various artistic projects such as staging private houses and businesses, art consultation and commissioning art pieces to private clients. You can see some of her geometric paintings at Avanti f&b in Denver.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being an artist is never easy, but it is probably even more difficult when you are trying to make it as an artist in another country. I think one of the most challenging things for me has been to really believe in myself and in my art. That has been a struggle for me for years especially at the beginning of my artistic journey. Now, I do believe in myself and in my abilities as an artist. I really love my creations, but I have done a lot of inner work to be able to see the value in my art and in my artistic talents.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I am an abstract painter. I am also a woman and an immigrant, so my art also comes from those perspectives. I have two very distinct styles in my art: a geometric style and a more fluid style. To me, the creative process in art is a form of inner work, a way to really dig deep in ourselves and to discover who we are and what we want to transmit to the world. Art is also a way of creating community since it is such a transformative process. Art has always been a way of communication and a medium in which society reflects its changes. My art program “Paint Your Life” was really a way for me to help children, teens and adults explore their creativity and to help them find their own power and voice through art. That is something that art has helped me with in my life and I want others to have an opportunity to experience powerful and transformative art processes.

Developing and delivering that art program in Guatemala and the US has been an accomplishment for me. In terms of my own art, I am very proud of my paintings at Avanti f&b and also about the recent launching of my online store.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Something that I think is really big for artists right now is social media. Now, artists have the ability to connect with people through social media and this is something that I see growing more in the next decade. People want to connect with the art but also desire to connect with the person behind the art as well. I personally use Instagram almost solely for my art but I also share everyday things with my followers because I think that it is a unique opportunity to create more personal connections with people who like your art. They get to see where you live, what you enjoy eating, and what your everyday looks like. It is a more intimate relationship beyond just looking at somebody’s art in an art gallery when you don’t really have any other connections with that artist. I think social media helps build multiple connections with your audience and that is very interesting to me. I like the idea of letting people get to know my art but also who I am and how my art is a reflection of myself and my life experiences.
