Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Sorden.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Since childhood, I’ve always had a fascination with scents and potions. I have vivid memories of shopping adventures with my mother and inhaling the perfumes encountered in various apothecaries of the day. Fast forward to my adult years and that passion was electrictrified when I started experimenting with scents and pouring candles in my kitchen. Deemed a ‘natural rose,’ my hobby quickly became a full-fledged business as demand for my products continued to increase with fervor.
A trip to Paris changed my trajectory. I was introduced to the wonders of Cire Trudon, the house of the world’s oldest candle making proprietors. It helped me refine my olfactory senses and bring deeper awareness to my work.
Today my intention is to help my customers feel deeply cherished and loved. We carefully curate each collection with thought and care, offering others solace, hope and magic. I sell my wares to thousands of retailers across the country who are like-minded in their intent to help others. I also recently refurbished and reopened my front store to include a tea bar and a community space. We offer restorative yoga, sound healings, drum circles and tarot card readings. Our purpose is to provide a safe haven for our community where we can heal, release and activate.
Has it been a smooth road?
Every small business owner has challenges. It would be a lie not to acknowledge this part of the journey. However, I attribute my success to turn each challenge into a learning experience where I’m able to heal and grow. I truly practice what I preach: self-love, self-care and compassion. For example, when a supplier runs out of product I need, which stalls production, I take it as a divine message from source that it’s time to get outside and play. I can’t control what happens each day, but I can control my attitude. I find the more I lean into the flow and greet each obstacle with amusement, the happier I am and the more of that love I have to give.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Magic Fairy Candles – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are primarily known for our intention and care that is infused into each product we create. Every soy wax candle is hand-poured in our studio in Colorado, each crystal is charged under a full moon, every batch of herbs is carefully curated. I think the love we put into our work is felt deeply by our customers.
Starting with candles, we’ve now moved into a wide variety of products for the home and body such as bath bombs, soaps, oils, sprays and balms. We recently launched a tarot card candle collection which focuses on the Major Arcana. It’s been such a huge hit that we are having trouble keeping up with demand! We’ve also moved into the CBD arena, offering a wide variety of products that are infused with this medicinal powerhouse. I recently had a customer call me personally to thank me for our Relax collection. She has some serious back problems and claims a bath infused with our CBD bath salts is the only thing that has offered release. I love receiving messages like this as that is exactly why I do what I do! To help others feel loved and live up to their higher purpose.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the entrepreneurial creative vortex that is the front range.
I only see light, so I really have no dislikes.
Industry Outlook
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
The world as we know it is transforming right before our very eyes. While it’s creating a lot of fear, I’m embracing it with amused curiosity. We are breaking down old establishments which no longer serve us to start anew on a foundation rooted in love and hope. I’m excited to see what happens next!
If I could predict the future, I would say that there may be a huge return to old-world ways of existence. Apothecaries will be of significant appeal as people will come to learn and explore the huge world of medicinal practices and ritual. I see a return to gardening, education and community. It’s with this prediction that I recently refurbished and reopened my storefront (yes, in the middle of a pandemic). It’s been a powerful experience. As soon as we reopened the doors, we were greeted with huge waves of people eager to surround themselves with community once again and to nourish themselves with our wide range of products.
Pricing:
- Each month we put together a ritual box that offers tools for celebration. For example, on August 1 we are celebrating Lammas, or first harvest. Our Phases of the Moon Box has been a huge success and we sell many of these each week. The price varies, but usually is around $60.
- We also have started a variety of events in our Meet-Up Group (Longmont Magical Healing Group). These events range from free online classes to eighty dollar tarot card readings.
