Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Patrick.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
March 18, 2019, my father committed suicide. At that time, I had no idea what to do with myself and how to move on. It was truly one of the hardest things I had experienced. To see my superhero be his own villain. Many days I would think of how I could have done more or how I could have saved him. I soon realized I could not think that way anymore, but to think of how I could possibly save others and to bring awareness to the feelings my father felt daily.
Everyone has memories of their parents taking them school shopping for clothes. Well,, my dad was the main one to take us. Some of our best memories are going clothes shopping and then going out to eat at his favorite restaurant, La Siesta. That’s where the idea of a clothing brand came from.
The name Yellow comes from the song “Yellow” by Coldplay. My dad played the guitar and he was a musician, so the way he expressed his thoughts and feelings were through song. “Yellow” was the song he chose for me. It was our song, and every time I hear it, I see my dad’s smiling, round face. It reminds me of when he was truly happy.
Every item and every graphic is a symbol of my dad and the memories I cherish and hold so close to my heart.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been very rough. Not only did I not have a clue about how to run a business, but I did not know how mentally exhausting it can be. Some days, I feel like Yellow makes things worse because it brings up pasts that I don’t take about or deal with. However, I realize that one day those feelings would come up anyways; so I might as well have a healthy way of dealing with them.
Running something so important and powerful as Yellow at such a young age can really be exhausting. Then, you add in starting in the middle of a pandemic. Some nights I am up late looking for new inventory or putting numbers in to make sure we can survive the next month. All these challenges have assured me that I am capable of anything I put my mind to.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Yellow – what should we know?
Yellow is a clothing brand. We mainly focus on women’s clothing but have some unisex graphic tees. Like I said earlier, every graphic and every design is a memory of my father or something someone has said and stuck to me that has helped me through this process.
Yellow has a bigger picture than me healing or expressing y thoughts. Yellow’s main goal is to bring awareness to suicide and feelings people usually choose to just shove down. Five percent of sales from Yellow go to suicide prevention and crisis centers to help people like my dad who feel they have no one and nowhere that’s there for them.
My main goal with Yellow is to show others that good things can come from tragedy, not everything has to be terrible always, and you are not alone in your feelings. I want some on to put on one of my items and feel surrounded with love. There are so many outlets to help fight depression, and that’s what I hope Yellow shows others.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel like how personal I am with everything I do helps. I put all buy feelings and emotions into every item. I advocate for suicide prevention all day, every day. It’s my passion.
We not only fight for lives affected by suicide but all lives. This past month we did a fundraiser for Black Lives Matter. We care about all people and all walks of life.
