Meet Lisa Acker of The Pink Suitcase in Castle Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Acker.

Lisa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
A Pink Suitcase is an artisan and vintage boutique established in 2015. I have been in the vintage retail business since 2009 and have loved every minute of it. My favorite part of my job is the hunt. Being the sole buyer, I am able to pick out pieces that cater to just about every household. We stock daily with wonderful home decor pieces including vintage, classic, trendy, antique and kitschy.

We carry several wholesale lines that are wonderfully appealing. We also carry a line of Anne Taintor stationary products, including sticky notes, note pads and magnets. These are one of our more popular lines as they are funny, colorful, vintage-inspired and sometimes irreverent! I believe in retail therapy, even with the smallest of pieces and I hope to spread some happiness your way when you peruse my store.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s challenging to juggle a retail store when life throws you trials. Being a small business owner, you don’t just work the usual 40 hour week but you sometimes continue late into the night with projects for work. My husband passed away in June of 2019 after a nine years battle with leukemia. This was a challenge to keep moving forward with the business when I was also being pulled heavily to my family. The key is to know when the balance of your business life and personal life is off and adjusting it. Life is a series of adjustments!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Pink Suitcase – what should we know?
A Pink Suitcase is definitely a labor of love. I partnered early on with a girlfriend and started doing outdoor artisan shows where we would sell repurposed vintage home decor and furniture. We quickly became a favorite spot for many of our regular customers at these markets. The partnership split after a few years and I branched off on my own and entered into the merchant mall experience as The Pink Suitcase. I have been doing this now for over five years, with the business growing each year. I handle all aspects of The Pink Suitcase, buying, selling, staging, etc. I specialize in affordable home decor, including inspirational decor which I have found to be very popular and a needed boost for many these days. Many of my products are also great unique gifts. I also carry beautiful vintage silver, antique frames, doors, retro suitcases and other wonderful pieces that you can’t find anywhere else.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My evolving inventory is what keeps my retail space exciting! This requires a nonstop approach, working long hours researching the newest and coolest trends.
