Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Bitner.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Four years ago, my husband and I relocated from the Midwest suburbs of Chicago to Colorado chasing our love for the mountains and our desire to spend more time outside in nature. Shortly after moving to the Front Range, we decided to finally break out the camera my parents bought us several years earlier for a hike in Estes Park. On this specific hike, my husband captured a photo of a mountain chickadee mid-flight. That moment sparked some friendly competition and I knew I had to challenge myself to take just as good of a picture if not better. This fun contest quickly transformed into one of the biggest passions of my life, photography.
At first, I concentrated primarily on landscape photography in the Rockies. With such magnificent and awe-inspiring scenery, I quickly became obsessed, bringing my camera on every hike and trip. Over a year ago, my husband and I bought an empty van, which we named Vivian, and completely transformed the empty interior into a tiny home on wheels that we lived out of full time with our two fur babies for over six months. After traveling from Colorado to Oregon to the Canadian Rockies all the way to Florida in Viv, we decided to pick a home base on the East Coast having never been there before. We landed just outside of Charleston, SC and were working part-time. This move provided me the opportunity to start growing my photography business.
As a history and anthropology major in college, I absolutely love studying people! People are so versatile, resilient, and we are so much more alike than we are different. Because of this, I have also been a people watcher, curious as to how people interact with one another. So, I decided to combine two of my greatest interests, photography and studying people to create Tiffany Bitner Photography.
At Tiffany Bitner Photography, nature is our biggest inspiration and our primary focus is to be a visual storyteller documenting our clients’ uniqueness and personality from behind the lens. When I founded TBP, I wanted to make sure that I am capturing my clients’ truest self and have their photos be a real representation of who they are as individuals and as a couple while keeping nature at the forefront of everything.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
2020 has thrown some curveballs this year to say the least! I launched Tiffany Bitner Photography in January of this year and had about a month before the majority of the US went on lockdown. While this was challenging for a business in its infancy, as it was for so many other businesses and individuals around the world, I decided to use this time to invest into relationships. I could not be more excited with how the partnerships I formed during quarantine have blossomed into some of the most uplifting and supportive connections I have made at this point. I reached out to many vendors during quarantine in hopes that since we were all in the same situation, unable to get out and make weddings happen, that we could brainstorm the best ways to transform our businesses to adapt to the constantly changing environment around us. The positive response I received when reaching out to other vendors in the wedding industry honestly blew me away! The support and sense of community in this industry is inspiring and I could not be more appreciative to every single person I spoke to who offered advice, answered my questions, listened to my challenges, and became much more than a vendor!
I think another struggle being new to the industry is learning the ins and outs of how to successfully run a business. It is so much more than simply taking photos. In fact, the majority of what I do at TBP is administrative work. It involves setting up client meetings, email correspondences, location scouting, permit confirmations, contracts, taxes, and the list goes on. The actual act of photographing and editing is not the largest portion of my day-to-day. I think this is so important to know starting out that when you make the decision to pursue photography as a business there so much more to consider than the fact that you love taking photos. But, to me, that is what keeps it interesting! That is what helps you build something you can be proud of and knowing that it is so much more than taking beautiful photos makes it that much more special and worth it!
Tiffany Bitner Photography – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Tiffany Bitner Photography specializes in elopement and wedding photography in Colorado and beyond. You can find us anywhere in nature! Adventuring is our absolute favorite. Fur babies are ALWAYS welcomed and encouraged to join for your special day. Want to hike to a secluded lake? Let’s do it! Have you been dreaming of a sunrise ceremony on a mountaintop? We can make that happen! Does dancing in the desert sound more like you? I am right there dancing with you. We focus on building custom experiences that fit our clients’ needs. I am more than just your photographer, I am your location guide, adventure enthusiast, and cheerleader! Although our clients receive photos at the end of their day, the aim of TBP is to create an unforgettable experience from the time you first inquire to the day you receive the final gallery. We want the day to focus more on you and your best friend and less on taking photos. The photos are there to complement your day and the adventure you will share together on that day.
Because of this experience, at TBP, we are most proud of the relationships we build with our couples! Every person and every couple are so unique and the day each couple says “I Do” should be a genuine and honest reflection of who you are as a couple. At TBP, we aim to ensure that couples can create their dream day that is true to them. I am your biggest supporter throughout the entire process with the goal of capturing you on your big day in the best way I can in hopes that you reflect on the photos and feel as though I captured your uniqueness and personality. This aspiration paired with a deep passion for nature and highlighting the world in all its beauty alongside your love is what sets Tiffany Bitner Photography apart!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment so far is actually made up of many small moments and the perseverance I have had throughout all of those moments. There are so many reasons to doubt, especially when starting a new business. You wonder if you are good enough as a photographer. You question if you are following the right steps. You ponder if it gets easier with time. But the reality is you are good enough! You will figure out the right steps. And it does get easier with time and you find a groove. Continuing to push through the challenges of remembering to always confirm about permitting prior to a session, heartbreaks of not landing that client, and hours upon hours of emails are always worth it! There will always be days that are hard. There will always be days that are really great too! Just like the state of Colorado, there will be valleys and peaks. But, the climb to the summit is always worth it and the views never disappoint. And you eventually learn to dance in the meadow. All the struggles and the lessons learned have helped Tiffany Bitner Photography grow into what it is today, and I could not be more excited about what the future holds!
