Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Rubright.
Linda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Thirteen years ago, I accidentally got into feng shui.
There was an organization near me that offers an assortment of low-cost classes to the community. The courses range from the typical (How to Scam Proof Your Life and Basic Bridge) to the less expected (How to Flee the Country and Intro to Pig Roasting).
My mom was coming for a visit and I was looking for mother-daughter entertainment. It was February in Colorado, so options were limited. I browsed the weekend’s available classes. Medicare 101 seemed like a bit of a downer. Dad would probably have questions if we signed up for How to Flirt, and neither of us had an immediate need for Traveler’s Polish. Then I saw a class that had something to do with using feng shui to attract the life you want.
It seemed tolerable.
I signed us up.
On the morning of the class, Mom and I pulled up to where it was being held—it appeared to be an old military base. We walked into what was likely the former mess hall and/or the site of the Boot Camp Talent Show. The instructor came over and cheerfully gave us our workbooks in a three-ring binder.
Moments later, she jumped into the class content. She began by telling us her success stories—sleep issues resolved when unsettling paintings were taken out of a bedroom, lost loves reunited when photos and other items were moved to a specific area of a room, and enormous raises occurring seemingly out of nowhere with the addition of a handful of common household items to particular areas of the home.
Mom and I perked up.
The instructor explained how energy moves through your home in a specific way and that different areas in your home represent different areas of your life (such as money, love, or health). If you can improve the different areas of your home that represent these different life areas, then energy will flow more freely and easily to them—and guess what happens next?
Money, love, health, etc. will flow more freely and easily to you!
Wait just one minute, I thought. Can I really just move some things around my house and by doing so, get all the things I wanted in my life?!?
After the class, my mom and I jetted off to the Tattered Cover and bought every book they had on feng shui.
I was determined to do this.
Until I thought I wasn’t.
Every time I attempted to decipher my class binder and my pile of books—I ran into the same problem—the rules twisted my brain. To exacerbate the issue, even when I did start to grasp it, it still involved sifting through 100s of pages of which frankly sounded like woo-woo mumbo jumbo.
Then I thought I had spent my entire career helping Fortune 150 companies translate incredibly complex ideas into simple explanations easily digested by the masses. Could I, I thought, apply that skill to feng shui, too?
I made a spreadsheet with the different areas feng shui could support (love, reputation, money, family, health, creativity, children, skills and knowledge, travel, bring helpful people into your life and more) and what to do in each of these areas. That evolved into some rough but user-friendly cards/cheat sheets with less mind-bending instructions, which evolved into my recent book Lazy Luck: Get Money, Love & Happiness with Feng Shui (The Super Easy Way).
My user-friendly approach to feng shui quickly proved to be successful.
Days after I rearranged my home and office to attract a better job and more money, I went out to dinner and ran into an old work friend who told me she had been meaning to get in touch—she had the perfect job for me. A few months later, I had that job, no commute, and a 30 percent raise.
I was so enthused that I started doing feng shui for friends and family. When people were in a tough spot, instead of taking them out to dinner and drinks, I would go to their houses and start moving a few things here and there in the area of their home that represented the part of their life that happened to be not so incredible at that moment.
Without fail, my friends, and then eventually my feng shui students, would call me days or weeks later and tell me about the jobs or projects or checks or bonuses that arrived out of the blue… about the hot piece of something they met in the cereal aisle and are now excitedly planning their third date with…about the peace that had come over their family they never thought possible… about how life just felt more fulfilling, easier, happier, and finally, under control.
I also have over 20 years of experience in the digital marketing space. My career is focused on two key areas. First, leading digital marketing initiatives to recognize impressive gains in revenue, customer acquisition, brand recognition and loyalty for the biggest companies in the world to startups; and second, taking extremely complex ideas and determining the best way to make them easily understood by audiences not fluent/educated in the topic.
I have utilized these career talents to build a blog, The Delicious Day, which while it was active, was read by tens of thousands of people every month. This blog included interviews with celebrities, New York Times Best Sellers, well-known scientists, politicians within the Rwandan government, prostitutes in Amsterdam’s Red Light District, leaders in the decluttering movement and others.
In its five years of activity, The Delicious Day had multiple articles go viral—some with over 80,000 social media shares; it was read in every country in the world; and it held visitors on the site for 50% more time than the average. I had an article which was in the top 40 most popular posts on Medium (this prompted Evan Williams, one of the founders of Twitter, to reach out to her personally). Another article was requested to be reprinted in Marie Claire. I have written multiple blog posts which, to date, have been read 100s of 1000s of times.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth? Oh, God no.
But went it works, when people tell me about their successes when I have a great class when I get book sales from people all over the country – it makes it all worth it. I don’t have any illusions that it will all come easily, but I also don’t have any delusions that it has to be hard.
As just a few small examples, I have dealt with many low quality and not-totally-ethical vendors or partners, all kinds of technical difficulties, major learning curves with social media, Amazon, InDesign and just about every other tool you could imagine, getting over the nerves of teaching classes and speaking in front of groups of people, asking for favors from just about everyone, getting over my shyness of putting my book out there, spending 1000s of dollars to get everything in order, starts, stops and do overs and then more starts, stop and do overs, snowstorms that delayed my promised delivery date of books, Yelp deleting all my reviews and the list goes on. It is endless really but so is the list of people who have offered me hours and hours and hours of their support, expertise, feedback, encouragement and love.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Happy House Feng Shui story. Tell us more about the business.
I am an author, teacher and consultant for feng shui. Feng shui put simply, is an interior design technique that not only makes your home feel and look great – it also helps you attract love, money, a better job, health and all kinds of happiness into your life. It started between two and three thousand years ago as a highly secretive endeavor only known by Chinese royalty. It came to the Western world in the 60s or 70s.
I started Happy House Feng Shui because I love feng shui, but I found most of the resources out there were so confusing that they were preventing a people from reaping the benefits of it. I am most proud of how simple I have made it for people and the successes they have had with it.
How I teach people to do feng shui is quick, very approachable and light. There are many books/methodologies out there that explain how to do feng shui in 100s and 100s of pages. And candidly, I am still not sure if people know how to do it even after reading them.
I explain how to do feng shui in two easy steps. (I have tested it on children – they get it in minutes – or less.) My book Lazy Luck, I like to refer to as Dummies content for the Twitter world. It is short, to the point and crazy easy. I wrote it this way because I believe there is a massive segment of people that want to be what I call “recreationally fluent”. Meaning they want to be able to do new things easily, confidently and in a way that feels fun without a massive output of energy. I believe people want to reap the benefits of something without feeling they have to dedicate a large part of their day, week, month or life to it. That is what my book does and that is what my approach is all about and bonus – when you do a few easy things, you attract money, love, happiness, a new career and a lot more.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say not a lot either way. I have had a lot of people selflessly try to help me, give me input, try to promote me and encourage me – not to mention give me hours and hours and hours of their expertise. I would say love has helped me more so than luck. I don’t know if I really believe in bad luck. I think most things happen for a reason – you either win or learn. Either way – keep moving forward.
