Meet Jodi & John Mowery of Landline Doughnuts in Broomfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodi & John Mowery.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We have dreamt of having a community coffee shop for years. Once our youngest went off to college – we knew it was time to make it happen. We’d had a lot of different business ideas (fudge, candy, cookies, brownies) but landed on doughnuts as the universal love. People love doughnuts and love trying new doughnuts. I became obsessed with the artisan doughnut craze happening across the country. That obsession led me online to Portland Maine and Leigh Kellis of The Holy Donut. Inspired by a 1930’s recipe, potato doughnuts are delicious in a whole new way. They’re not a cake doughnut – nor a raised doughnut. They’re kind of in between with a great texture and longer shelf life than your average fried circles.

So our daughter’s senior year we started testing recipes and formulating what we’ve come up with today as a crowd tested potato doughnut. By May of 2019, we had signed up for three local Farmers’ Markets and were ready to dive into a summer of bringing potato doughnuts to our community. It was hard, we learned new things every market, and at the end of the season had a pretty great following of potato doughnut lovers.

In March – as the world was changing – we were gearing up for more markets and decided to start offering free delivery of our doughnuts. We delivered thousands of doughnuts throughout the pandemic and continue to do markets and deliveries to meet the needs of our customers. We love seeing our customers at the market – but also respect those who need or want contactless delivery right now.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Last year, the key to our success was sampling our doughnuts. Once we got our signature brown butter glaze in your mouth, you were hooked. Some people tilt their heads and can’t quite imagine what mashed potato in a doughnut would taste like. It tastes like a really great doughnut. So our first year was really been about education.

We are currently a Cottage Food business so it is just the two of us. We work hard! John likes getting up early (yay) and Jodi takes care of all of our online presence. We realized in March that our markets might not even happen this year and that people needed a way to get doughnuts now. We had to quickly get a website up during the pandemic so that our order forms had a place to live. The software we rely on also had growing pains, so we’ve had to work through a lot.

This 2020 market season has been amazing and people have come out to see us in numbers we didn’t expect at first. We’re so grateful for supportive communities, friends and family.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Landline Doughnuts – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Landline Doughnuts makes handmade, fresh Potato Doughnuts from scratch in our home kitchen in Broomfield. Our signature doughnut is covered with a brown butter glaze that is a doughnut you will not soon forget.

We always carry Brown Butter, Churro and Chocolate glazed doughnuts. Then we add in a seasonal flavor depending on what’s best in Colorado. Right now, that’s a Roasted Peach Pie Doughnut that is a flavor explosion in your mouth. We roast organic Palisade Peaches to intensify the peach flavor. No artificial flavors or colors are used. The glaze is hugged with a pie crumb that adds texture and contrast to the sweet peach glaze.

We are constantly innovating and striving to bring our doughnut lovers the flavors that they want to see. Suggestions are always welcome.

We are at Farmers’ Markets in the summer and are getting a doughnut trailer ready to go for the Fall of 2020 so that we can bring the doughnuts to you and your neighborhood.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The next chapter of our journey will involve a 1982 Burro camper that we are converting into a Doughnut Trailer named Daisy. She is an aqua blue that you won’t miss! With her, we hope to do some catering, events and be able to pop up in neighborhoods in the greater metro area.

Our long term goal is to find a cozy storefront and create a doughnut and coffee shop where grandpa would be proud to take the grandkids. We want families to create good memories together – whether that be at a market, event or visiting our shop. We want our doughnuts to connect you to your memories – of loved ones and of foods you grew up on. Connecting with our past while building strong connections with those in our present would be a dream come true.

Pricing:

  • Our doughnuts are 4 for $10 or 8 for $20
