Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Greene.
Shelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I decided to go back to college, I was working as a certified pharmacy technician. I had no idea what I would do after college, but I knew that pharmacy was not my passion. I was working in Florida at the time, where most of the patients I worked with were seniors. Many of these patients were taking upwards of 12 meds a day. Many of these meds were to counteract the side effects of the other meds. I just felt like this wasn’t right. I started school taking all the core classes which were required, including several electives in interesting subjects. One of my classes was Eastern humanities, where my professor was also an acupuncturist.
During a lecture, he discussed the theories behind Chinese medicine and stated, “a headache is not caused by an aspirin deficiency”. This was the moment that I decided to change to medical science and then go on to get my degree in Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine looks at the patient as a whole and seeks to find the root of the problem rather than masking the symptoms with medications. This truly spoke to me and has been my passion ever since.
Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, I have no complaints. When you are on the right path, things tend to go smoothly. I would say the most common obstacle has been a reluctance for people to try acupuncture because of their past experiences with needles. Honestly, there is little to no discomfort with this type of needle. In fact, they are so thin that you can fit several acupuncture needles inside the opening of a standard needle. I couldn’t see myself doing this if I had to hurt people every day. People are pleasantly surprised at how amazing they feel after a treatment.
Please tell us about Peaceful Points Acupuncture & Chinese Herbs.
I feel like Peaceful Points is how I make the world a better place. I love to make people go out into the world feeling better. I am a sole proprietor and when you are in for a treatment, you get my entire focus. I have made my business a place where patients come to feel care for. I offer healthcare with a personal touch. I give advice that works for each individual & not just blanket statements. I respect that we are all on our own journey and what works for one person may not work for the next. This is a safe space to work on physical, spiritual, and emotional issues. Treating people as a whole being instead of their symptoms makes the treatments work on all levels of care.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
There are way too many to list them all. So many people have encouraged me on my journey, from the dear friend who told me that I was too smart to not go back to school to each patient that crosses my path. I continue to learn from each of them. I am forever grateful to my adoring family who has shown grace while I try to balance work & life. They have supported me on each step of this path and I couldn’t have done it without them.
