Today we’d like to introduce you to Lance Ruby.
Lance, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a rural town in Utah and started playing guitar in my early teens. After high school, I moved to Logan, Utah and studied guitar performance with Corey Christiansen at Utah State University. I went on to get my master’s in jazz studies at the University of Northern Colorado with Steve Kovalcheck.
After completing my education, I moved to Fort Collins, CO and joined Fort Collins music scene staple Musketeer Gripweed. We just completed recording our new EP More Than Ever at legendary Fort Collins rock studio The Blasting Room. I joined the Bevin Luna Band, which was recently featured on NPR Music and Australian radio. I also joined Graham Good and The Painters and we played two sold-out shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Oct. 10 and 11 this year.
When I moved to Fort Collins, I started my business Lance Ruby Studios LLC, teaching one-on-one in-person and Skype lessons, in addition to performing. I’ve taught online students from Utah to New York to Chicago and Colorado! I also have recorded four courses this year for one of the top online guitar education platforms.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business in the music never guarantees a steady income. It is nearly impossible to make a livable income as a musician, only doing one thing. Diversifying is the best way to make various streams of income as a musician.
The Covid-19 pandemic has decimated the music performance industry. Before the pandemic, I was playing 3-4 To gigs every weekend, and even more when touring. The changes this year have taken away a large portion of my career activity, and it has been a challenge to find safe ways to make and share music.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Lance Ruby Studios LLC specializes in guitar performance and education. I want to help my students achieve the goals they have with music. Whether that is learning a few simple Taylor Swift songs or passing an entrance audition into a university, I want to see my students succeed. I have worked on a curriculum that teaches skills and concepts that every musician must know. The combination of having a good curriculum in combination with teaching the students the music they love creates good musicians and inspired students that are excited to come to guitar lessons each week.
I love teaching guitar. It has been the most rewarding thing in my life. Seeing students gain confidence in their playing and also in themselves is an incredible experience. As a lifelong student of music myself, I believe it is crucial to create musicians and music lovers out of our students.
