Today we’d like to introduce you to Kajsa Rossetto.
Hi Kajsa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey started quite unexpectedly. Like it has been for many others, this has been a year full of change. I was a flight attendant for the past eight years and never thought I would one day run my own business, much less one based on making play-dough. As the pandemic grew and travel diminished, so did my flight attendant career. I am always searching for new ideas and activities to keep my toddler entertained. This year that has been challenging to say the least. While browsing online for Christmas presents, I read about playdough sensory kits and I was intrigued. I had a hard time finding a kit that included exactly what I wanted, and I also couldn’t find anything similar that was made locally. The next day I was sitting on the couch talking with my husband and I told him that I was going to start a business making playdough sensory kits. Once I said it out loud, I knew that I was going to make it happen. After a making a few trial batches of play dough, brainstorming some ideas for kits, and pulling my hair out trying to come up with a business name, I went for it and registered my LLC. Just like that, the Dough Play Dream was born.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
This is still a very new journey for me. I am constantly learning about what is needed to run a small business, including marketing my product, tracking expenses, etc. When I initially launched my business, I was overwhelmed with the positive response and the orders coming in. All of a sudden, I had to figure out how to make playdough in much larger batches. This journey has pulled me into this century and prompted me to create an Instagram account and hold a larger presence on social media. I am truly an old soul at heart and don’t mesh well with technology, so catching up with the times has been a big step for me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make playdough sensory kits for kids. Although this business is a new journey for me, I have always loved crafting and creating activities for my daughter. I have really enjoyed creating kits that kids will have fun with and keep their imaginations busy. My favorite part of this journey so far has been receiving photos from parents showing me how much fun their kids are having. It makes me so happy being able to bring joy into people’s lives.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
When I first had the idea of starting my small business, I reached out to another small business owner in the community. She was so supportive and helpful in answering the mountain of questions I had. I have learned not to be afraid to reach out to members of the community and ask questions.
