Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy King.
Hi Mindy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After being medically retired from the Army, I struggled with both a sense of purpose and a way to deal with my PTSD. I had tried therapy and medications, but nothing quite stuck. One day I made a handful of ornaments out of felt that represented the places my husband and I have lived and served. After posting them to social media, I quickly had a growing list of requests. About five years ago my husband bought me my first small embroidery machine. A couple of years later, I used the last of my savings from being deployed to purchase a larger embroidery machine. Since then, we have moved a couple more times (thanks to the Army), been through a couple more deployments, and I’ve expanded to a ten-needle and 15-needle embroidery machine. I use my business as a way to give back through donations for a number of different organizations, making items for fundraisers and more.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
With moving, there are always new laws and rules that apply. Additionally, with my husband being gone on a regular basis for the military, my boys transitioning to homeschooling, and ongoing treatment for my back and neck injuries, as well as migraines, there have been a lot of schedule adjustments, flexibility and just prayer.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I offer specialized embroidery that is used to not only handle my PTSD in a managed form but also as a way to give me to the community. Although we move, I have been blessed to have a number of clients that continue to work through me because they know the quality and heart I put into my work. Each item that goes out is special and has a story…. I get to be a part of that story for many with the items they entrust to me.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I rely a lot on my church family here to pray for me when I’ve had medical troubles. I do enjoy reading books on military history that I can connect to and books on mental health.
