Thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers and tell them a bit about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Heidi Fessler and I am a 31 year old Hairdresser working at Vantage Salon in Wheat Ridge, CO. I’m originally from a very small town in Northern Iowa, but I have been in Colorado since 2013. I’ve been in the beauty industry since 2010, but my passion for it started as a very young child. I made the big jump to self employed life in 2018 and I’ve never looked back. For me, taking this leap of faith has been the most empowering and exciting journey of my life so far and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

What does a typical day look like?
One of the amazing perks of being self employed is setting your own work schedule, and for this reason I choose to work afternoons & evenings. The benefit of this is having my mornings to myself to center and prepare for the upcoming day. I spend my mornings meditating, journaling, reading, and walking my dog. I usually head into the salon around noon, where I spend my day letting my creative energy flow and connecting with my clients. I love my job and most days fly by. I usually wrap up around 7 pm and head back to my apartment to spend my evening cooking, watching tv, and more reading, meditation, and journaling. (Mental health is extremely important to me, so reading, journaling, and meditation are a must!)

Did you always know you wanted to be in the beauty industry?

I think I always knew I wanted to be in this industry deep down, but I didn’t head right in that direction. Fresh out of high school, I felt the pressure to attend a 4 year university and get a bachelors degree, but no matter how many times I changed my major, something about it just didn’t feel right. Finally after 3 years, and 3 different majors, I finally jumped ship on a traditional college education and enrolled in beauty school. Once I made that change, I never looked back.

When joining a salon team, what is most important to you?

Teamwork. I love bouncing creative ideas off of my team members. I appreciate their input and vision, I think opening up my eyes to someone else’s thought process only enhances my insight and creative flow.

What’s something our audience would be surprised to learn about you?

I can be a huge Tomboy. Growing up I was always the girl in glitter who wasn’t afraid to get dirty, and I’m still that way. As much as I love putting on makeup with fresh, flirty lashes, I enjoy hiking in the mountains and watching football and hockey. I’m not afraid to break a nail!

Is local support important to your business?

One hundred percent. I would be no where and no one without the support of my clients & community.

How do you give back to your community?

I donate a full service appointment, whatever that person wants no maximum amount, to a local non profit’s silent auction fundraiser every year. The non profit is called Small Choices and it was started by my friend Katie Poppert right here in Denver, CO. They help support young adults with cancer by supplying them with whatever they want and need. Anything from chipotle giftcards to iPads. It’s very close to my heart as my sister passed from leukemia in 2015.
