Conversations with Jessica Dory

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Dory.

Jessica Dory

Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello! My name is Jessica Dory and I am a newborn and family photographer and also have my own photography studio in Denver, Colorado. I started my photography business in 2019 and then added the studio in 2023. I love interacting with families and children, and it is a life long dream come true to make art with photography for a living.

I was always artistically inclined as a child and mesmerized by photographic images. I shot photography with a film camera during high school when I was the editor in chief of my high school newspaper and then again in college where I received a Bachelor of Fine Art.

I always wanted to work in the arts but spent quite a few years working in the restaurant industry where I was a bartender, chef and baker for a world famous Denver restaurant and nightclub. I also managed the social media, website and newsletter for this establishment and was the day-of wedding coordinator for 4 years.

In the end I never let go of photography and was so excited when I decided to start building my business about 5 years ago. Overall it’s been an amazing experience and I haven’t looked back since!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting and running a small business has been an exercise in persistence and patience. At times it has felt overwhelming and like I was not making as much progress as I wanted to. There are a lot of photographers in Denver and it has felt challenging to be seen and found online. The business and marketing side of being a photographer is a lot of work and a challenge that I underestimated when I first started down this path.

However, my business has continued to grow every year and for that I am so thankful. It is the best feeling to get to work with families year after year and watch their families and children grow. And I LOVE photography – it’s a bit of a magical feeling to be able to document these moments in an artistic way and something I don’t ever get tired of.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer who works largely with families, starting with pregnancy, birth, newborn and beyond. I recently opened my own photography studio, Little Rabbit, and it has been so much fun to have a studio location to offer to my clients.

I would say I am known for authentic and artistic portraits. I seek to go beyond basic portraiture – I strive to create photography that accurately reflects and documents the families that I work with while also creating something unique and beautiful.

Although my primary focus has fallen on families I do also offer branding and headshots, couples photography and small weddings. I am also a certified birth doula and photographer.

I currently offer in home sessions, on location and sessions in the studio.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I offer free initial consultations for all potential clients and feel like having a short chat is the best way to discuss goals for the session, answer any questions and determine the best timing and location while also making sure we are a good fit.

I appreciate it so much when my clients share my work and recommend me to their friends and family. Word of mouth truly is the best. Reviews and sharing my website with fellow mom friends and in moms groups on Facebook is such a great way to help 🙂

I love collaborating with other small businesses and being able to share the work that we are both doing. I do offer branding sessions and sometimes trades with other business owners.
