AJ Keyser of Louisville on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with AJ Keyser and have shared our conversation below.

Hi AJ , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
Last night 10/26/2025 I felt very joyful because I was performing at Gold Hill Inn in Boulder, CO. The crowd was so engaged they sang along with the songs. They really lit up the vibe and I fed off their energy. Would definitely recommend this venue.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello everyone on the internet! My name is AJ Keyser and I front a band called Montana Sand. I am a mental health educator and music therapist. I like to move people with my music. My bass player is named Aislin Stewart, drummer Mathew Kitchen, pedal steel Phil Broste. We play all over the country. We spread a positive message with our music, and make it an inclusive space for all, disabilities, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC. Primarily we play country, folk and alternative music.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
I think being a music therapist and behaviorist, you also really need your own therapist. My old therapist River Tu was amazing. They helped me learn so many skills and really helped me become confident.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I think I am afraid of taking risks financially. This December I am taking a risk and driving to Nashville to be seen. I may not make enough, but at least I will be putting myself out there.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I think I am pretty transparent about my mental health on my public platforms. I am open with my fans and friends. I have been bipolar 1 since I was 15, but I think it helps me be creative. It also causes a lot of struggles, but I can alchemize.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Probably just tour more. I would teach after the road destroys my energy levels. Driving that much is tiring,
