Hi Emily, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I am a pretty creative person across the board and lately I have been in to drawing, painting, knitting, and cooking new recipes for my family.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a portrait photographer on the front range in Colorado. I think what sets me apart from others in my field is my home studio space which allows me to capture meaningful memories throughout the colder darker months without the overhead cost of using traditional studio spaces. using the space has given me the opportunity to expand creatively through lighting, posing, exposure, composition and depth, which comes with me into my outdoor sessions adding complexity and uniqueness.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a young artist I had many teachers. Some were supportive and encouraging, but many were not. By the time I left school, I believed that becoming and artist would take something that I lacked. It would mean not only having talent that I did not inherently possess, but also a commitment and work ethic that would predicate all other life experiences. I wanted a family, and I saw the two paths as being incompatible. What I have learned since is that what grows is what you water. If you want to grow your art, practice it. If your family is a priority, be with them. Dedicate yourself with consistency, and the results will reflect those efforts.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Despite starting out on your path with hardships that most others will never have to face, you have been consistent and worked hard. You never gave up, and you should be proud of that.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my closest friend would know that my family matters most to me over everything, and being a good person with compassion and empathy for others.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I definitely feel most at peace when I am in nature. I have a profound respect for the outdoors and love camping, hiking, biking gardening and generally being outside. I feel the weight of all insignificant things lifted when I can face the horizon and see the sky.
