An Inspired Chat with Jessica Maxey of Brighton

We recently had the chance to connect with Jessica Maxey and have shared our conversation below.

Jessica, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I’m the first to wake up in the morning. I exercise and walk my dogs before dropping my daughter off to school. If I have board & train dogs, I walk them in the morning before my daughter’s school then I return home to work with them. Typically, my one on one sessions are in the morning and early afternoon.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a dog trainer. I work with dog owners to help get them and their dogs on the same page. I offer weekly training sessions, board & train and day training programs. My board & train dogs stay with me and my family in our home in Brighton, Colorado. I work with them daily and take them out for walks and field trips. I am also a musician. I play Native wind instruments and perform with my husband, Josh. He plays the guitar. We’ve played at museums, powwows, and music festivals, as well as on radio and television.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
The relationship between people is broken by a lack of communication and trust. I’ve discovered throughout my years of working with dogs that they won’t trust me if I can’t communicate to them in a way they can understand.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could give my younger self advice, it would be to trust your gut, believe in yourself, and never deviate from what you feel is sacred and right. You can only alter how you see yourself; you cannot alter how other people see you.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I am a caring wife and mother to my family. I present myself as a disciplined, soft-spoken, reliable and empathetic person to the general public, and to my dog training clients in particular. Dogs and children share certain similarities, and I believe that presenting these qualities can benefit them.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I’m doing what I was meant to do. My parents undoubtedly had a significant impact, but in the end, I make my own decisions in life. I won’t regret the decisions and career shifts I’ve made. All of them have helped me build the life I have for my family and me.
