Mothershed Design Co. helps small businesses succeed by building brands and websites that stand out, attract the right customers, and drive growth. Founded in 2016, we’re not your typical design studio. We’re not a big agency and we’re not flaky freelancers. We’re the best of both worlds: we’ve got the multi-faceted skills of an agency and the flexibility of freelancers, without the expensive overhead or unreliability. Owned and operated by husband-wife team Josiah and Meg Mothershed, we’re your go-to creative partner dedicated to your brand’s long-term success.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Long before design became our profession, creativity was simply who we were. As kids, we were the ones sketching endlessly in the margins of notebooks, inventing imaginary worlds, crafting pretend languages, and telling stories that stretched far beyond the page. That spark never went away—it just evolved.
Today, through our work at Mothershed Design Co., we channel that same innate creativity and love of storytelling to help small businesses craft brands that are clear, compelling, and built to succeed. We believe great branding is more than just good design—it’s about connecting with people through a clear story, thoughtful strategy, and visuals that truly stand out.
By staying true to who we are, we help others do the same—and build businesses that reflect their purpose, passion, and potential.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Stop being so hard on yourself—mistakes are a part of life (an important one). You’ve got this!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
We believe in the power of staying small (but mighty).
We’re committed to building a business that prioritizes quality over scale, relationships over transactions, and purpose over growth for growth’s sake. Staying intentionally small allows us to work closely with our clients, remain deeply involved in every project, and do the kind of work we’re proud of—thoughtful, strategic, and creatively excellent.
We don’t measure success by how big we get, but by how deeply we can impact the businesses we serve.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
It’s easy to follow the formula society hands you: get the degree, climb the ladder, play it safe. But Josiah and Meg have always been gently rebellious—more curious about what could be than what should be.
Rather than following a predefined path, they built their own—brick by brick, brand by brand. Through creativity, grit, and a deep belief in doing meaningful work, they founded Mothershed Design Co. from the ground up.
