We recently had the chance to connect with Robyn Otero and have shared our conversation below.
Robyn, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: When was the last time you felt true joy?
I was in the middle of the gravel ponds on a paddleboard, laying back watching the clouds billow and dissolve with my husband. I felt at peace while floating on the water with a gentle breeze and realizing how much joy can be found just taking a moment with nature. My problems seem to dissipate when I think about how little they are compared to the majesty all around me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Welcome to The JOY of WAX, Highlands Ranch! I’m Robyn Otero, the owner, and my mission is to transform your waxing experience into something truly JOYful. As a licensed esthetician for 22 years, with 14 years dedicated to Brazilian waxing, I understand that comfort is key. That’s why I’ve developed the Blissful Brazilian wax with numbing, designed to make even first-time waxers feel at ease. My commitment to using hypoallergenic wax and employing advanced techniques means you can expect a fast and virtually pain-free session.
Six years ago, I envisioned a place where waxing wasn’t a chore, but a positive, confidence-boosting service. It brings me immense joy to see clients leave feeling great, free from the hassle of shaving and razor burn. I truly consider my clients friends, and their trust means the world to me. I’m also honored to be recognized by the community, having won Best Wax Service in the Highlands Ranch Herald for five consecutive years
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My grandfather definitely taught me the most about work. There’s a family joke that we’re “hearty stock,” meaning we’re hard workers. My Grandad embodied this perfectly. He worked tirelessly his entire life, from helping on the family farm to owning a garage and repairing cannons at a military base. He could fix anything! He was methodical and always taught me to do things the right way, not the easy way. He instilled his work ethic in my mom, who then passed it on to me. I hope my children have learned this by observing us as they grew up.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
A defining wound in my life was being sued by my former employer for opening my own studio. I felt it was time to move on because I disagreed with their management style and saw it as my chance to finally own my own business, a dream I’d held for 15 years. When they tried to shut down my business with a lawsuit, I persevered because I was innocent of their claims. This also coincided with the pandemic and some serious mental health challenges my family faced. There were days I questioned my ability to continue. After a year of legal battles, I was able to stay in business and pursue my dream. Each success my business has achieved over the past five years makes me even prouder because of the battle I fought to get here.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
A cornerstone of my life, both personally and professionally, is the principle of loving others as myself. Years ago, while grappling with insecurity, I discovered a profound study. It illuminated, through scripture, my identity in God’s eyes, and it truly transformed my perspective. Not only did I begin to see myself in a new light, but to my surprise, I found myself loving others more deeply as well. This newfound understanding of how God sees me allowed me to recognize that same inherent worth in everyone else. This truth absolutely shapes my approach with clients, and I hope they feel that sense of genuine care and acceptance when they’re in my studio.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I can honestly say I’m tap dancing to work! I feel incredibly fortunate to experience this level of excitement regularly in my career. I remember being ecstatic while writing my first business plan, exhilarated when I opened my doors for the first time, and the positive feedback from first-timers, like “That wasn’t as bad as I expected,” brings me joy consistently.
