We recently had the chance to connect with Annette Rogers and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Annette, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I love this question. I would say at this point in my life I am a wanderer. I spent most of my life on a path of safety and predictability, believing if I followed every rule and did everything just right that I would reach my goals and ultimately live the life I’ve always thought I’d have. This way of thinking kept me in a box, especially creatively. I was unknowingly putting so many limitations on my life. I am constantly encourage my kids to try new things, be adventurous, seek knowledge and new experiences and thought why don’t I take my own advice. Life is now a journey and each new experience shapes my world. I have so many goals, dreams and aspirations some old some new but the voyage is the most beautiful part of getting there.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi,
My name is Annette Rogers and I’m a photographer.
I’ve always been Interested in photography. I was the kid with the disposable camera attached to me at all times. Taking photos of everyone whether I knew them or not. Getting strangers to pose and smile was a specialty of mine so it was no surprise to anyone when I wanted to pursue photography. I remember my first “real” camera, the memory card was a floppy disc. Thats when I truly fell in love with it. The freezing time aspect of it all. I shot all kinds of things in my early years trying to see what I was best suited me. To this day I’m still not sure so I shoot mostly everything but my favorite has to be anything with a funky location. Landry mats, beauty supply stores, train stations, warehouses etc. Bringing clients visions to life. Those are always the most fun and creative. Right now I’m working on a couple editorial style projects. I hope to do more staged themed photoshoots in the future.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child who suffered from severe undiagnosed ADHD, I’ve always believed that I wasn’t capable. Capable of doing well in school, capable of finishing what I started, capable of doing anything that required me to lock in. It felt like things that took consistency and effort were just out of reach for me. This made me wildly insecure at an early age. Its been so fulfilling setting goals and challenging myself as an adult. I recently started boxing. Its the most difficult activity I have ever done. It challenges me in so many different ways. I love doing things I never thought I could do. My younger self is so proud of me.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of public perception. I always cared about what people thought of me, if they liked me, my photography, my ideas. This held me back in countless ways, I’ve blown opportunities, taken my name off list for different gigs . It kind of made me not want to be perceived at all. Like I needed to hide and shrink myself. I’m grateful to have grown out of that because who cares what people think? I’m rooting for myself so hard.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Aside from my family who will always matter the most, my friends would say social justice is extremely important to me. I believe people should be treated fairly with equal rights and access to resources. It’s something I am quite passionate about.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I am most at peace when I am with my family doing simple things. No phones and devices. Just us laughing, playing games, watching the sunset, shooting the breeze.
