April, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
As the owner and an interior designer at A Lue Designs, a prevalent misconception regarding interior designers is that our role is merely to enhance aesthetics. In truth, this perception is quite misleading. Engaging an interior designer offers long-term advantages, as we possess the expertise, knowledge, and resources necessary to supply you with materials and designs that will enhance both the quality of construction and the functionality of your environment.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is April Stites, and I am the owner and founder of my interior design firm, A Lue Designs. We are based in Colorado, yet we provide commercial, residential, and vacation rental services across all 50 states. From sophisticated high-end remodels in Arizona to industrial furnishings for small local breweries in Montana, we handle it all! A Lue Designs is committed to educating clients about interiors and construction to ensure that we make the best decisions for you and your space. We take the time to understand your needs and desires so that we can support them, and we collaborate as a team to create a distinctive design that suits you.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Being a young entrepreneur entails the necessity of rising each day. I needed to recognize my own worth before the world could acknowledge me. Therefore, in response to this inquiry, I would assert that I had to confront the depths of my being that were profoundly uncomfortable, painful, and frightening in order to emerge with confidence regarding my work and my actions within my industry.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You have brought joy to countless individuals! Not only have you transformed how people inhabit or utilize their environments, but you have also significantly impacted their lives. You have established remarkable relationships with contractors, realtors, plumbers, electricians, painters, and many others. You possess a complete team and a robust support system ready to assist you whenever necessary. A new chapter is poised to unfold, so take the initiative to open the door.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
In present times, individuals possess considerable construction skills, which is why I understand the appeal of the DIY approach to home improvement; however, I do not endorse it. If I were to choose a subject to educate homeowners about, it would be their DIY projects. When prospective buyers search for a home, they desire to retain the inherent charm of the property while incorporating modern elements. It is important to note that many of the current design trends will likely fade in popularity within a decade. Therefore, for all the house flippers out there, this is a crucial consideration! If you lack the expertise to preserve a home’s original charm while updating it, it is advisable to engage the services of an interior designer.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
I do not believe I will regret not taking any action; however, one aspect I currently regret as I invest more time and resources into the company I have established is the lack of time and funds for travel. Traveling is something that nourishes my spirit and introduces me to fresh ideas. As a creative individual, we flourish through new experiences and opportunities that spark inspiration. Travel and cultural exposure deeply connect me to sources of inspiration and enhance my critical thinking regarding my designs. The only genuine regret I would have in life is if I never had the opportunity to explore different regions of this planet.
