Check Out Alexander Nieves’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexander Nieves.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Alexander Nieves – My Story

My journey started long before Nieves Ministries ever became official. I was raised in a low-income family, surrounded by love but also by challenges that taught me resilience early on. I was born partially blind and grew up with a prosthetic eye—something that made me see the world a little differently, both literally and spiritually. My mom, grandma, and twin brother were my biggest inspirations, teaching me that even when you don’t have much, you can still give back to others.

The vision for Nieves Ministries actually began as a class project at Overland High School. I built a website and outlined a dream for a nonprofit that could help people who felt unseen—those facing homelessness, disabilities, and hardship. I never let go of that idea. Years later, after working multiple jobs and saving what I could, I finally made it real. In November 2023, I filed the paperwork, and by January 2024, Nieves Ministries officially came to life.

From there, our work grew quickly. We began hosting community events, feeding the homeless, distributing Bibles, and supporting families in need. Soon after, I launched Pinnacle Defense, our nonprofit security ministry that provides protection for businesses and events while offering employment opportunities to those looking for a second chance.

As the vision expanded, I founded the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Colorado, which now serves as a bridge connecting local businesses, artists, and cultural leaders. One of our proudest accomplishments has been organizing the Viva La Isla Del Encanto Festival—Colorado’s largest Puerto Rican cultural celebration—bringing together music, food, and community pride in a way that unites people from all backgrounds.

Everything I do is rooted in faith. I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about status or titles—it’s about service. There have been setbacks and challenges, but my belief in God’s purpose has kept me moving forward.

Today, what started as a classroom dream has become a growing movement built on community, compassion, and purpose—and I know this is only the beginning.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting a nonprofit from the ground up with no major funding, no investors, and no formal blueprint was a challenge in itself. There were times I used my own paycheck to cover event costs, feed families, or print flyers just to keep Nieves Ministries moving forward. But I’ve always believed that when your purpose is bigger than your paycheck, God will make a way.

There were moments of doubt, especially when people didn’t take my vision seriously or when partnerships fell through at the last minute. Running multiple community programs—like Pinnacle Defense, our nonprofit security ministry, and the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Colorado—has required learning how to balance leadership, finances, and community trust all at once.

Hosting large events like the Viva La Isla Del Encanto Festival also came with obstacles—finding sponsors, managing logistics, and proving that a small ministry could successfully organize a major cultural festival. There were setbacks, cancellations, and even times I questioned whether I was doing the right thing.

But through every obstacle, I’ve learned to rely on faith over fear. I’ve seen how persistence and prayer can turn challenges into blessings. Each setback strengthened my leadership and reminded me that real growth doesn’t happen when things are easy—it happens when you refuse to quit.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the heart of everything I do is one mission — to serve people and strengthen communities through faith, safety, and opportunity. I’m the founder and Executive Director of Nieves Ministries, a nonprofit organization based in Colorado that focuses on community outreach, resource assistance, and empowerment programs.

Through Nieves Ministries, we’ve built several branches that each serve a unique purpose. Pinnacle Defense is our nonprofit security ministry, providing professional guard services for local businesses, events, and churches while also giving individuals a second chance at stable employment. Meanwhile, the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Colorado connects business owners, artists, and entrepreneurs, helping them grow while celebrating Puerto Rican culture and heritage.

One of the things I’m most proud of is organizing Viva La Isla Del Encanto Festival—Colorado’s largest Puerto Rican cultural celebration. The festival has become more than an event—it’s a movement that unites families, showcases local talent, and reminds people of their roots. Seeing thousands of people come together under one vision of faith, culture, and community is one of the most fulfilling parts of my work.

What truly sets us apart is that everything we do operates from a place of purpose rather than profit. Every project is designed to give back—to feed, protect, inspire, and empower. We don’t just talk about community; we build it, one initiative at a time.

Right now, we’re in the process of transitioning our main website to ServeAurora.org. This change represents a bigger vision—to create a central hub for volunteerism, community service, and local partnerships within the City of Aurora. Through ServeAurora.org, we want residents, businesses, and churches to have an easy way to get involved, sign up to volunteer, donate, or request support. It’s about making service accessible, visible, and unifying under one platform that reflects who we are at our core.

At the end of the day, my work is about impact. Whether it’s providing security through Pinnacle Defense, creating cultural unity through the Puerto Rican Chamber, or building community outreach through Nieves Ministries, I’m driven by one belief: serving others is the greatest way to honor God. Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about our city is the sense of community and leadership that genuinely cares. Aurora has such a diverse, vibrant mix of people and cultures — it’s a place where everyone has a story and where collaboration really matters. One of the best examples of that leadership is Mayor Mike Coffman. His commitment to the community stands out in a powerful way. He has personally attended every Nieves Ministries and Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Colorado event to this day, showing up not just as a politician, but as a supporter of local people and their vision.

When he officially proclaimed our festival day as “The Island of Enchantment Day,” it wasn’t just a symbolic gesture — it was a moment that recognized Puerto Rican heritage as an important part of Colorado’s cultural identity. That kind of acknowledgment gives people hope and pride, and it reminds us that unity still exists in leadership.

What I like least about our city is the ongoing struggle with community disconnect and limited resources for smaller organizations trying to make a difference. There are so many passionate people doing good work, but not always enough funding or awareness to sustain those efforts long-term. I’d love to see more city-wide collaboration, especially for youth programs, housing support, and small business development.

Still, I truly believe Aurora is on the right path. With leaders like Mayor Coffman and a community that refuses to give up, we have all the right ingredients to continue growing together — stronger, more united, and more compassionate than ever.
